Well - first up the loaner WAG54GP2v2 seems to be providing me a working phone :-) So that's great news.

But boy... I had forgotten how bad some other network gear is when it comes to UI and help. Linksys really stink at this, don't they?

Anyway - quick question: how do I set up a LAN static IP to be assigned by MAC address? I'll be damned if I can see where to do this.

I suppose there's no chance the ZyXEL P-2002 ATA will ever be supported by VFX?

Well, I conntacted LinkSys support and got no where. They suggest the WAG is stuffed. No idea if they're right or just taking a stab in the dark Still, I can't see any obvious troubles with my settings and nor could they...

Jamie: the computer I want the IP assigned to is set DHCP, and I've tried renewing the lease.

Leilani C. (18794): Alright. Do you have IP Reservation option on the router's setup page under Setup tab?
Jamie: yes
Jamie: I went into that and set an IP and MAC address it was to be used for.
Jamie: to no avail.
Leilani C. (18794): I see. Were you referring to "IP Settings" on router's setup page under "Setup" tab where it gives Internet IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS options?

Jamie: I couldn't get VoIP working with my ZyXEL P660H ADSL router and your Linksys SPA2102 so I got a loan of a WAG54GP2v2 instead.
Jamie: My ZyXEL P660H can't see any SIP packets coming or going from the SPA2102, but that's another matter...
Jamie: long story short the call quality was awful
Jamie: but the WAG54GP2v2 works :-)
Jamie: if you've any thoughts as to how I could get the SPA2102 working I'd love to hear that as well.
Leilani C. (18794): Okay. Have you tried to assign different IP address other than 192.168.1.34 to see if it will work?
Jamie: I have the ZyXEL P660H highly configured for my needs so it's a pain to be forced to replace it. Just adding the SPA2102 would have been idea from my point of view.
Jamie: Nope. Right now the computer I want the IP assigned to is the only device turned on that is attacked to the WAG
Jamie: I wanted to make sure nothing strange was happening
so nothing else has taken that IP if that is what you were thinking.

Jamie: I already changed that for logging into the web based config page.
Leilani C. (18794): After that, please let me know your Internet IP address and port number for your remote management.
Jamie: so - give a password which I'll change later. I assume this 'tech' user is separate from my admin login?
Leilani C. (18794): No. I only need your Internet IP address, port number for your remote management, and Username and Password of WAG.

Leilani C. (18794): All you need to do is enable the remote management and there's no need to open the port number under Port Forwarding.
Leilani C. (18794): The settings that you have under "Setup" tab is all correct.

Call quality is acceptable. Not great, but nothing you wouldn't experience on an international call or mobile. However I'm frequently losing my connection and sometimes I have to manually renew the DHCP lease in network prefs to get the WAG54GP2v2 communicating with my Mac again.

I'm not sure I won't be switching back to my ZyXEL P660H by the end of the day :-( Still, I'll plod on for the rest of the day. I might just take a quick nap right now, though. I must've sounded like the living dead on the phone to your support just now, heh.

Interesting. My friend has signed up for VFX but has not yet got a Router that is capable of it. I am seriously considering it too. We are both thinking on the Linksys WAG54GP2.

Question - All in all, are they good quality devices which will provide the best quality phone calls? And all round wireless\Broadband performance

Maverick - 00800 7666 7666 is not being recognised by the VFX service. This number is an international free calling number (thus the double zero at the beginning - that is correct) that I frequently need to use. Should this not be working? If so it basically kills my ability to stay with the VFX service :-( Can anything be done?

Also I am experiencing slow loading of webpages and generally rather poor performance on my ADSL connection. It's not really awful, but not as snappy as I've come to expect.

Ok - 8:33PM: my phone call to 0800 83 83 83 (PIzza Hut - I was ordering pizza for dinner) just started dropping out a lot and then my phone went totally dead. It is back working again now. I just tried calling Telecom on 123 as a test (not that I want to talk to a real person there, but it gives a nice long recorded message that is helpful in testing the line) and it did not work at all.

Few minutes later:

Okkk... no pizza for me tonight - I tried again twice at the call quality is awful. There is something badly wrong there. I did manage to try another test call elsewhere and that worked ok.

The issue is your connection you have a large amount of packet loss, bad packet loss = bad call, so your DSL connection is effecting this, I will have support run some checks on the line, as for the 00800 sorry not supported as don't have any relationship for this.

Is there any reason why you don't support UFIN numbers (00800 ......)?

These are international toll free numbers, I know there was a discussion about these on GZ a year or so ago because Vodafone didn't have their network correctly configured to handle them either. They are quite common these days.

Not exactly. Apple NZ uses such a number and it's impossible for some people to call them.

NOT actually free? Say again? That number - 00800 7666 7666 is Apple
Computer's toll free number. Unless I'm badly misunderstanding the
situation it shouldn't cost anyone but Apple a single cent for calls to
that number. Certainly it costs callers nothing.

Well, leaving aside all the tech and quality issues I can't continue
with VFX without support for 00800 numbers. I wish this had been made
clear when I signed up :-(

Unless this can be changed I'm going to have to ask you to discontinue
the VFX service and transfer me back to Telecom. Or does anyone know of
another company that will handle my home analogue phone line, but not
charge me extra if I don't have ADSL with them?

Just to be clear: I _DO_ want to stay with Xnet for my ADSL, at least for now.
