This is going to be a complete balls-up if this has already been implemented. There is nothing on the Vodafone website about locking / locked phones. The on-line store doesn't have anything about locking. There had better some publicity about it and fast otherwise a lot of people are going to be angry!

Its not the lying that hurts Paul, but the credit you're giving our intelligence.

This is one of the places least likely to swallow that load.

Can't wait for others to enter the GSM cell industry here - to competitors watching here: offer me better data rates than Vodafone and I'm yours! That would mean I can't tell Vodafone staff that I know how much I enjoy unlimited calls to landlines in 40 countries (including NZ) on my data plan, but I could give that up for a carrier with integrity.

well, full credit to Paul for coming on here and making an offical statement about this, as piss weak as it was, at least Vodafone has the nous to make an official statement regarding this, rather than letting the inuendo continue.

Yes, and that is reason why many of them have joined them too.

Vodafone’s mobiles are sold exclusively for use on Vodafone New Zealand’s network.

WHen I purchased my GSM Nokia Phone from Dick Smiths, I was never told that it could only be used on VF NZ's network. There was nothing on the packaging, nor did I have to sign any contract. I had my existing sim card so just put that in.

Therefore I assume it is a 'New Rule', and they will be required to place a warning on the packaging, as well as being told at the point of sale, that this is the case.

If they do this, I hope they at least take $50 off the price, to make it exclusive for that particular network.

At least I will be able to use my current mobile on all 3 networks, by just switching the sim card.

I can see a lot of stores ending up importing unlocked phones. Locking phones to a particular network, certainly doesn't instill customer loyality.

I wouldn't consider my 'vodafone experience' as anything special. I constantly get disconnected during phone calls, and the coverage is poor, compared to telecoms coverage. Also being on prepaid, I have to pay $1.39 per minute to call another networks cell phones, and they charge some really huge amounts for using mobile internet, which are probably the highest mobile data charges in the world. I have regually filled in vodafones cusomter satisfaction surveys that they send, and always comment on these points, and they never both to reply or make changes to their plans. I know I can signup to a contract and get cheaper data rates, howeve I want to pay as I use it, and not have to pay a fmonthly fee.

Is it an official statement from VF? The only news I can find on this topic in a google search, is from geekzone. Therefore I don't know if this is a media release, or whether they are still writing something to release to the media, which has a bit more spin to it.

I think Vodafone has done a great job in creating a new market.

When in the UK, there was a fantastic trade in the £10 unlock code for handsets. Any gadget, done within 5 mins. It was farcical. These traders did a roaring trade.

$50 from Voda or $20 from me..... the sunday markets will be roaring.

Data is the future, and it is VFs high data charges are preventing me using it for that purpose. They have it sweet in the US.

Yes, Paul Brislen is the Vodafone voice.

Its official as I was informed of it on Monday afternoon as a VF staff member who needed to know. Paul, of course, is the official word but it wasn't announced until it started on May 1. From what I got, may not be all handsets and definately doesn't affect any handset you already own.

I'm no pasty but have worked in some huge organisations and to say that Vodafone doesn't have a brand or experience to protect is, IMHO, cods wollap. Every large multi-national has a brand & experience, from Coke, McDonalds to ExxonMobil. Doesn't mean that all people will enjoy that experience everytime but there is something good about being able to go into a McDonalds in Russia and get a Big Mac that tastes like a Big Mac. So I don't think someone coming from a Vodafone offshore network will be surprised at all as they will have the same policy over where they come from.

Yep, its like DRM. You pay good money for something which you theoretically then own, but find you can't use it in the ways you'd like due to artificial restrictions placed on the item which are not inherent to it at all.

Totally! I wouldn't have the guts to personally front up with an announcement like that, especially when you know its to an audience who will see right through the spin.

That's going to be a major loss of revenue for Vodafone NZ.
If your clever Vodafone NZ toy is too exclusive to be used whilst on any other network, perhaps you should get a clever World-Mode phone from someone else :)

No - He meant that they are sold for use in New Zealand on the Vodafone network only, not the other new players networks. Roaming will be exactly the same overseas.

Telecoms worldmode handsets are network locked as well, from what I have read on here, and can't be used on the Vodafone network already.

I think you misunderstand what has been said. You will still be able to roam overseas etc but if you have a locked handset you will need to leave your vodafone sim card in, thereby ensuring that vodafone gets the roaming revenue.

Clearly their locking is all about the two upcoming competing networks.
