I have a Novatel XU870 Express Card and it never ever got anything over the old average - even though it can do 7.2 Mbps, and it would do better than the vodem because of the technology. Vodafone simply doesn't scale well to those speeds due to the backbone infrastructure.

So in theory those cards (and the vodem with firmware upgrades) can go up to 7.2 Mbps. In real life? Good luck.

Also, thanks for your long-ish reply. But if you look at my post I compare technologies - I am not comparing Vodafone to Telecom coverage.

Zimsar it's my understanding that the Vodem's Huawei receiver chipset is only capable of 3.2mbps theoretical downspeed, irrespective of software/firmware. They have plans to roll out the new chipset soon though but will do so silently as consumers get aggravated when their $400 device they purchased yesterday is superseded. In saying this, Mr. Freitas is the undisputed champion of digital knowledge on these boards so he may have some inside knowledge Wink

And here was I thinking we had a true celeb as Our Leader! Seriously though - and trying not to sound gushing - I have been highly impressed with the knowledge shown around here. Makes us mere mortals unworthy!

Sometimes these trolls get to the nerves of a budhist monk - and I am not one.

So my alternative is to hit the ban button.

This might sound like a dumb question, but what is the meaning of 'troll' in this context? Does it have a specific internet forum definition?

Personally, I'm looking forward to the release of Samsung's Omnia (i900).  The specs seem to beat every other smart/touch phone out there.

Sorry to call you out on this one... but

"But if you look at my post I compare technologies - I am not comparing Vodafone to Telecom coverage."

Actually you are comparing coverage not the technology. By your own statement it's Vodafone's backhaul that lets them down not the WCDMA technology.

The backhaul is about the amount of traffic they deliver to a geographic location and doesn't have anything to do with the cellular techonology (this sounds like a deplyment / coverage thing to me).

I'm only saying this because I took the same approach to our account manager after a trial in our office looked like Telecom was the clear winner. Surprisingly their technical guy agreed that this was probably the case and "suggested" I try it in more than one location, because he could see a Telecom exchange from my window where I was testing. What we found in our testing was in some of our branch locations Vodafone killed telecom for speed and in others it was reversed. It also seemed to vary significantly at different times of the day and in one location it flip flopped back and forth. They told me they adjust the backhaul based on the usage of the site over time because they still have to pay a queens ransom for the fixed links and that pricing was still benchmarked against Telecom's rates (Also that line that was taken to explain the high price of mobile data). Not sure the numbers stack up, but the Vodafone guy made it sound like there was a bigger picture and it seemed more plausable than a lot of the other opinion stuff I have read and the marketing speak from most of the Vodafone reps. I'm hoping to have another meeting next month and will put these questions to him again and see if I can get more depth. Until we sign the contract I think we can get some good infromation out of them!

My conclusion after testing several devices on both networks was that the whole debate over who is faster seems to have little to do with the thoretical speeds and much much more to do with the way the telco's have setup that location on a given day. I'm sure over time if Vodafone deploy thier 900Mhz thing and upgrade to the newer HSDPA standards this will eclipse Telecom. But guess what Telecom are switching to HSDPA also, so it will just be a case of watching who is spending the most on coverage in a given budget year.

On a side note, I was reading the manual in the iPhone box (page 7 & 8) and it looks like there "might be" two models one for the USA that supports 3G on 850/1900Mhz (Telecom 3G) and one that supports Europe's 2100Mhz (Vodafone's 3G). Can anyone tell me if this is just the blurb for the different region, or does this mean that the Vodafone i-Phones will not work on the Telecom network when it's launched!?
