I havn't received an email reply but thats ok, as long as it's at the back of their minds. Hopefully anyone who wants additional linux mirrors is expressing it to them.

seriouslycgi: surely theyve read this thread, they must be considering it or asking around for us. otherwise they would have said a flat out no because......

Seen it, read it, digested it and now thinking about it .......... I'm leaning towards not at this time due to other things on the priority list , but will see how we go after some internal discussion.

Thanks for the reply & "taking it under consideration", maverick

At least we now understand the current status & I don't have to keep checking back on the post every day

Please let us know if you've made a final decision, either way, or if we need to start exploring alternatives, as there does seem to be enough demand to merit such a service.

Your services are a good fit for linux users, and I would suggest that setting up a mirror (& limiting it to local traffic) would be a big benefit to your business, and possibly draw more linux users to move to your service

Xnet,

if you guys can make it so that access to my home network is free (for xnet customers) and that my upload to xnet customers is free, I will happily host a full ubuntu mirror...

Ideas?

Nice idea but it would be very slow. Servers generally have dedicated symmetric bandwidth, adsl upload probably wouldn't handle the requests.

Would it be possible for XN to provide some sort of gateway that would allow only XN local traffic?
This may be a way of limiting access

You are right about the adsl slow upload...

Possibly xnet can donate me a co-location and I will happily put a server in there Smile

Even though you're leaning towards no, the fact that an Xnet rep acknowledged and responded to the request is a large part of why I use your guys service!

My feeling correspondence with these guys has been pretty mixed, but since I've managed to get a direct contact inside, it hasn't been too bad.
For any telco service provider, for me, that's HUGE.
I've had hell over the year with various bodies in various countries, and I find this "small outfit" quite cordial & accommodating.

I've had a good run, but I'd like to reserve judgement, for the time being @ least

A local server with popular Windows open source/freeware apps would be good too...theres no NZ file repository anymore (since local Tucows mirrors went down) and at times its frustratingly slow to download even simple things such as Firefox.

Anyway... just a thought :)
