Well a HD PVR may tempt me to change up from an analogue decoder, to digital.

Right now what I have works fine, as long as I dont want to watch TV1 / TV2 / Freeview.

Old rubbish UHF Arieal in, analogue decoder, to PVR, Video player, to triple split to 3 CRT's.

Changing up will cost me new tv, and decoder and I'm not sure that I could split it like i do now.

Telstra's lack of being up front and clear with these big improvements is making my decision to go MySky HD easier and easier by the day.

At least a half dozen of us at work who are with Telstra will give them to early next year to come up with definate release dates.......none of this "It's coming", "well worth waiting for".

If not up and running by the start of the Super 14 it will be Ta Ta Telstra. Come on Dr Freeth, give your marketing department a rocket.

Quote of the day on Telstra's website under "Leadership" on the Company Info page - "Waiting for 'things to happen' isn't a viable alternative in today's dynamic marketplace."

I'm quite happy waiting, I'm not digging into my pocket for an HD TV in a hurry. Screw this consumer impatience and this obsession with having to grab the very latest of everything. Its only telly. A footnote, nay, a scrawl of fine print at the bottom of my "to buy" list.

I'mnot happy waiting. I like things like HDTV and I avoided getting MySky HDi because Telstra said they'd have a better alternative before xmas. Now not only is there no alternative but also no explanation.

I'm giving them until the Superbowl before I switch to MySky.

I dropped into the local Telstra store today & was told by the helpful person at the counter that the new system is currently in testing, and may be ready to roll out Feb-Mar-Apr 2009.

So will treat that with a grain of salt until its official, but at least it sounds like something is happening, albeit much later than anticipated.

Just for the record I don't believe TCL ever said they would have a product in the marketplace before Xmas - Infotech did but that was an incorrect statement. They did say they would provide updates however, somethging they haven't done.

Last I heard anything (around mid October) was a planned launch date in the 1st Quarter of 2009. When companies use the word "quarter" you can typically assume it's closer to the end of the quarter and not the start!

When do you think a Telstra store would receive correct feedback regarding a project which is still in the testing phase. The lack of response from anyone official at Telstra when it has even been on Stuff I would suggest is more compelling.

I will eat my hat if anything arives before the end of 2009. I would also be concerned regarding the quality of the product as well. Traditionally when TCL roll out something new the "testing" carries on for a while longer whilst customers are paying full price for it.

I am also unclear why TCL are not coming up with a similar broadband strategy to Vodafone for its "Red networks" in Auckland and Christchurch. They are getting the pressure put on them by Freeview in terms of MyFreeviewHD and Vodafone in terms of the "red network".

It would be good for them to be the leaders on a few initiatives rather than the chasers! Don't get me wrong I am fan of anyone who tries to offer alternatives to Telecom and Sky. But they have allowed their existing cable networks to remain pretty dormant AND not done what Vodafone are doing in offering significantly differentiated deals for their own network.

Hi Andy,

I would think that TC staff in the contact centres & media release would all be sworn to secrecy, even if they were indeed testing the product. As I mentioned in my post, I took the comments with a grain of salt.

As for Telstra being followers, didn't they lead with the fibre-optic cable... and aren't they the best internet provider for those on cable?

Probably being a tad unfair in my comments ... maybe ... but I don't think there has been much "innovation" for a while ... they don't offer really cheap broadband which means they don't deal with the volume of customers and can maintain good service levels and quality as an ISP - can't fault them for that I guess ... they just have to decide if they want to stay in TV or not. If they do they will need to get a PVR probably and need to go HD which they can't with their existing STB's anyway.

I think a challenge for Sky and Telstra will be how they can continue to charge $49 and $33 (ish) for their basic packages with a better quality product for the main Free-To-Air channels now available on Freeview. If TCL or Freeview could get to retail Sky Sport and keep the basic package free then they would take off I think ... I don't think the TCL infrastructure would handle it probably but certainly would be a good option.

The charging for the basic package is historical and the reality is that people have really been paying $65+ for Sport (to get Sport they needed to pay for the basic package).

Sky set the prices and the rules sadly not TC. Not sure when they re-negotiate but yeah they are a small part of sky's numbers so don't expect much change as they are not in a position to force much.

Sky sets sky's package choices and no one else. Many years ago I was part of a big feedback group for Sky. We had to go in for a whole evening and view ads, package choices, all sorts of stuff. It included current and past customers and the cost of basic was by far the most common reason for disconnecting. Even the people running it said what came out in our session was the same nationwide. The only reason they have never changed the pricing structure is .... they don't want to.

Good point re Freeview. With Freeview now one of the main reasons why I got TCL TV (lousy OTA reception) has gone away. Now if I can wean the family off Food, E!, Cartoon, Nickelodeon and Disney I could ditch cable TV completely.
