Yea $879 AUD from apple there but that is still $1,100nzd

BTW what was the release price for the iphone 3G there compared to the 3gs pricing (in Aussie)?

I popped into the Doncaster, Melbourne Apple Store today. They indeed are selling iPhone 3G S outright and completely network unlocked which is big news here - network locking is the norm for everything (not such big news back home in NZ)

$1040 AUD 32Gb Black and White.
$873 AUD 16Gb Black and White.

They have a queue at the front of the shop, but had sold out of the 32Gb model for the day (they get new stock overnight though).

The telcos (Telstra, Optus, VF) show strong reluctance to sell outright themselves as their buy price is about $990 AUD according to leaked documents so no profit for them. If they do sell them outright they are still network locked and it they charge a further $120 - $150 AUD to unlock them! So contracts are the only option especially if you live a distance from an Apple store - ie not in Melbourne, Sydney or Robina QLD.

Newguy: I hate waiting for stuff, i had been waiting since the first one came out.

And always thought nah I'll wait till 2nd Generation and then it came out not much different.

A Concrete Date of it's release here would make me wait but its just so tempting.

I think Video and the 3Mega Pixel Camera is Worth waiting for.

Yep the N95 I bought back in the UK over 2 years ago has a 5mp Camera (1 of 2 cameras).

I will be getting the 3GS but Im a believer than Apple is 90% hype and followed blindly by many.
Theyre like a graphic artist that has somehow ended up in IT.

Ok, my message didn't post so it looks like the base model has gone up from

8GB iPhone 3G (Black colour )= $729

In Aussie to $879 (more from telcos) directly from the apple store and I mean sure it costs more to produce than the 3G by $4 and has an additional 8GB of storage but even with the exchange rates it does seem like quite a price hike

The difference (I am just choosing June 26 of each year) is 1USD = 0.957304 USD in 2008 and 0.807467 USD in 2009 so a 15c drop which make the release price of the iphone 3G in aussie at $697.88 USD for 2008 compared with the iphone 3GS at $709.76 USD 2009

(I have probably done my math incorrectly as it is 12:30am - so don't blame me)

So the price is actually approximate based upon the exchange rate but well it seems awefully high and I can nearly guarentee that the New Zealand pricing would be much worse

If they can give a discount to new customers they can look after the ones they already have IMO. That said video, 1mp, voice recognition is hardly a $1300 upgrade!

The iPhone 3GS 16GB costs US$ 178.96. This is US$ 172.46 in material and US$ 6.50 in manufacture.

Oh dear... As someone that used to work with BOMs in a technology design and manufacturing company, I get utterly sick and tired of calculated BOMs being related to RRP.

If you _REALLY_ want to get upset, I recommend you go work out the raw BOM cost of a packet of microwaveable rice at the supermarket.

979.00 for the 16GB 3G.

No iPhone 8Gb's.

Gahh why is it more expensive?
I can only think of exchange rate. It was the same RRP as the 1st 3g in America.
I've waited for the new one, but $1400 is really quite expensive
