From much research as I'm completely clueless about radio network builds, the IuB interface is the connection between the actual radio gear on a building and the main radio controller for a area, from memory these IuB interfaces were usually Telecom links, but Vector have been rolling out fibre to a lot of your sites?
So, the traffic on 3G is slow because the link is swamped to that actual aerial in effect, not the area itself, i.e. if you walked down the road a bit and hit a different radio antenner with a different IuB backhaul to the RNC then it would/could be faster?
How many RNC's would a network the size of NZ have per provider?
Dropped call reasons could many so many where does one start
:-) Funny, I mean the problems Vodafone have specifically when handing over between 3G and 2G, so there are 4 RNC's for the 3G network, but the 2G network has seperate ones as well yeah?
You have made me curious, I've started reading 3G Wireless Networks by Clint Smith and Daniel Collins, it's a tomb at 500+ pages but I'm 26 pages into it :)

Hmmmmmmmmmmm thanks for the offer, I'll let you know once I chew though the 3G one I'm reading now, it goes into quite a lot of history on 1G/2G networks for the first few chapters CDMA/GSM/WCDMA/CDMA2000 and network design build.
What I still really struggle with is the fundenmentals of how radio waves/frequences and all that stuff works, or more specifically yeah actually I'm not sure what I don't understand right now haha
