I wonder what tactic Vodafone will try now to stop the stampede to Telecom? Looking at the figures today they only had 38000 new customers in the last Q - their worst quarter ever. While Telecom aren't releasing their results until next week I hear there were a few very happy people at Telecom Mobile today..

Id say they will heavily focus on their 3G offerings, video calling and high speed data.

'high speed data' read improved data speed for voda, I am a loyal voda cust but t3g is rapid

i think 3g offerings will be full on and the advertising budget for it will be enormous

although having slipped recently, voda is normally known for their great marketing skills.

I wonder if they will have anything truly innovative on offer this year?

mmmm.... thats a given - but its actual value/goods/services/price that im wondering about (and i dont think video calling will be a huge hit, although it should find a niche...)

agreed re: video calling,
it is kind of like ptt/p2t you need people with the capability to make the most of it (as I understand it)
data speed is a good offering, outright speed isn't that competitive but it can be put to use, streaming content, content on demand, improved portal coupled with improved content - mp3 games etc.

I seek 3g, because its high tech (i'm sure a few people here will agree)and improved email, browsing on the go, better camera etc
i like gsm handsets for their integrated flexibility I find alot of 027 handsets closed off.

I have quite low expectations of vodafone offerings but high hopes (there is a difference) hopefully something will suprise me

Vodafone's problem is failed handovers and losing the network all the time., I had perfect service in Australia on vodafone there for 8 weeks. Well it's back to VodafoneNZ horrid network I grew to despise.
I won't eleborate but I here are the dropped calls (written down to reclaim on my account, it's usually about $25 bucks)

7 out of 12 calls got a failed handover whist on m'way
1 call 4 times
2 calls twice
1 call once.

Suburb wise it was 3 out of 8 calls. A little better
1 call twice

Friends/colleagues I speak to always lose calls while I'm on the phone from my landline. ARGH!

it's getting expensive Vodafone and i'm getting tired of having to redial calls.

I'm patiently awaiting 3g, Hopefully it'll cure this nasty problem. if not, I have a nasty ol 2280 awaiting a connection for a 027 voice plan (I can't wear out that lovely harrier!)

I have been using this old hack for my 0800 calls this week and so far it's been Excellent. not one drop out or dropped call.

Where are you located, Auckland?

I'm also beginning to wonder what sort of coverage testing Vodafone do after there network reconfig for 3G. About 3 weeks ago there were new 900, 1800 and 3G panels put on the main site in Lower Hutt. The orientation of the 900 panels has been changed and inbuilding coverage in Woolworths and part of Westfield Queensgate is now 1 signal bar in parts and I had choppiness on my T610 while in Woolworths. Coverage before this was around 4 bars.

When the lions (and the balmy army) were here in Palmerston North... I had a similar issue:

When I called someone, it'd ring and just stop (according to the phone it had connected for 1 second) - it was charged as a call. Never bothered to get the money back as at that time I was switching over to On account.

When the calls went through to landlines, the voice quality was awful (I can hear fine, but the landline couldn't).

Calls would drop randomly when handing over

Apart from that only ever had two calls dropped off when busing from Massey back to the flat which use several cellsites on the way according to Sman (I usually can make calls without problem travelling there).

In my hometown calls would drop for apparently no reason despite the fact I wasn't moving (again, according to Sman I was camping on one site) or doing anything silly.

I don't know which telco to choose ??! :-P

i did have problems placing gsm calls in wellington while the "barmy army" were here, but sms was working fine, despite the free weekend. I guess those brits like their voice calls.
i had a much harder time finding a coffee in central wellington that saturday.

"What's Vodaphone Upto" discussions appear alot elsewhere recently.

First up, I have a Telecom and Vodaphone mobile phone. At times I have more of either. Don't ask. From either, I can record a video, send it to my mate on MSN, and s/he can see where I am within minutes of me sending it.

Voda announced a 3 month "brown out" on SMS services while they implement their new billing platform (along with their new content platform methinks).

Then the SMS promotion companies went bananas. NZ Idol launched after the announcement, so presume SMS arrangements were made earlier this year with both Telcos.

Up until now been dead crap quiet on anything new except an M-Payment/Hotlink deal with some banks.

Telecom gave away $ so people got free calls to the UK during the bombings, then so does Vodaphone http://www.vodafone.co.nz/aboutus/media_releases/20050713.jsp

Telecom goes nuts with mobile gaming big time (Fast & The Furious rocks by the way!), Vodaphone says "download the Juiced mobile game and get xx$ off the Xbox/PS2/PC version at a retailer". http://www.vodafone.co.nz/vlive/games/juiced.jsp?item=Games&subitem=juiced

Telecom is using WAP2 pretty well (it's a journey I'm sure...) and Vodaphone launches the new look n feel of their WAP2 (aka vodaphone live):

Bluetooth. Telecom have only 1 Bluetooth mobile handset, Vodaphone it's more like what colour phone would you like with your Bluetooth ;) Then again, with Telecom, you want Bluetooth? Well then you really want a PDA. And Telecom want that type of Business. Go figure no surprise.

At Christmas Telecom launched Trutones. These are MPEG4-audio ringtones (or less depending on your phone). Vodaphone have had "Realtones" for a while. It seems the Vodaphone "Realtones" are a "one version fits all" kind of arrangement, so quality is dubious.

When the Sanyo 7400 was launched this year on Telecom it came with a video client. So you need a Media Server. And media to serve. And people putting new media there for people to see. Etc... Vodaphone don't have a competitive offering to the streaming video from Telecom.

The Sanyo 7400 also introduced Push2Talk, and I think there are now 4 P2T handsets on 027, Voda has 2 maybe 3, and from all the Vodaflavoured billboards I've seen when PTT was HOT tt appears Voda thought they'd be somewhere more than they are now...something went wrong for someone that day.

I'm sure there's more. Check out the NZ spend Vodaphone has had this year. Telecom too. It's all out there.

Yes in auckland especially. Coming in from Paraparaumu to Welly central is pretty bad as are hilly areas of the Hutt but you expect that due to the landscape and sea.. This is not expected in flat old auckland where you interesect usually 4 or more cellsites.

always when moving from one area to the next (in a car with carkit/without/other phone)
