I think a few people need to think why they purchased the phone they did before moaning about Vodafone. If you want the full Live! experience then buy a certified Vodafone Live! branded phone from a Vodafone store. Vodafone aren't stopping you from using the 3G features of your phone such as video calling, data or WAP. The only thing they are doing is not allowing you full access to their Live! portal because you don't have a Live! branded phone.

Whether you like this or not it's modern reality that networks around the world aure customising phones so the user enjoys a portal experience that they want the user to see, whether it be Live!, T-Zones or whatever. You can argue all you want about this being stupid but there is very little you can do about it, the networks want you to enjoy an experience the way they designed it and to get this you're going to have to buy a supported phone.

There are plenty of places on the net you can access that offer mobile video, tones etc that are all free. I bet some of the people who were tempted to buy an imported phone because it was $$ cheaper won't actually want to spend money once the free stuff finishes on Vodafone anyway.

Oh please quit your moaning, If you are such cheap ###es to scrooung a cheap phone of tr#deme then you probably wanna save $$$, See below!!

Your phone won't work on the live portal and anyway you are only missing Music downloads, TV "highlight streaming" and some music videos. You have your video calling and 300KB mms sending/recieving Support.

Making your own content is fun and it works soooo much better ( no copy protection :-) )
I currently have 20 odd music videos and piles of chopped mp3's as ringtones for me and to share . (even through your 300KB MMS!)

Reccommended formats are just plain old mp3 and 3gp with tools available. (see above link)

Think of it like using a Sky sattelite decoder with Saturn, or a iDen (American format) phone on GSM, or "Gasp" Beta in VHS, At least Vodafone will partially connect up your imported phone coz Telecom sure won't.!

Ambrose_1 the V800 and Z800 are different. You own a house you decide who comes in the front door and same as vodafone they decide who can visit the 3G portal!!!

vodafone is a evil company this never happened in other countries (well maybe UK vodafone does the same thing) imagine if they do the same thing in other countries they will lose all their customers. they are the only gms network provider in new zealand thats why they are so evil just like telestra clear in australia..

Ah, c'mon... It does sound like zealots attacking Microsoft.

First there is an option to Vodafone in New Zealand. It is Telecom New Zealand. Their 3G network is way faster than Vodafone's own.

You have the option to switch companies. On Telecom only their approved handsets can be connected. On Vodafone any GSM handset can be connected, however only some can be used for all services.

There is a reason for this: customer satisfaction. If someone purchases a cheap imported phone, never before seem here, how can Vodafone guarantee that its services will work and look ok? Basic services will work: voice calls, video calls, SMS.

However they have a contractual obligation to sell legal copyrighted material like songs and video downloads only to DRM-enabled handsets. How can they make sure every cheap piece of plastic in the world will protect this material? They can't so they limit the distribution to some models only.

There are ways of purchasing and downloading images, songs and videos in other sites, outside the Vodafone live! walled-garden. It is your prerogative to do so.

Sorry, but if you go somewhere else you will find O2, Virgin Mobile, T-Mobile, Cingular, 3 and others all play with the same rules.

dora007a I think you need to get out more cause there is no way they are a Evil company!! live life more and this happens on many carriers. Try and use some of the Xtra WAP services from another provider and see what happens. The are many network network operators around the world that do this and the network is GSM not gms. Check out the link below and then advise me if they are Evil.

This happens everywhere. And sure, all companys will lose -some- customers with -some- policies or procedures or lack of service or whatever, but you cant stop that. No one can.

They certainly wont lose all their customers, thats a prespostrous statement, to declare that because of this, the company will fold.

Being the only company running a particular network type in a country doesnt make you evil either.

I guess a big problem with using the 'switch' card is the obvious difference between the two technologies (as we all know) that means we have to buy a new handset to switch. Customers may be wary of spending another x dollars on a CDMA handset if they have just spent y dollars on a GSM/WCDMA handset.

If both were GSM/WCDMA and didn't lock their phones to their own networks I'd expect to see more network hopping.

The choice is still there regardless.

(I'm not saying either carrier is evil (although the thought is quite amusing) either, and not trying too much of a troll either)

I know.

If both were GSM/WCDMA and didn't lock their phones to their own networks I'd expect to see more network hopping.

The point I was trying to make was that if you could use the same device on either network, disgruntled/unsatisfied customers could/would switch a lot easier (ie. just by switching SIM's) rather than forking out x dollars for a new handset. (hypothetical situation)

As it is currently, you have to buy another handset to use the alternative.

Speaking of hopping, I find it really absurd why there is no number portability (ie you can bring your 027 no to vodafone, and vice versa).... The government should really force this through. It will certainly introduce a LOT more competition...

And even more absurd is, why for Vodafone, you can't even bring your pre-pay number, to being on a plan??? Surely that would be in their interest!!!!!!

you cant compare vodafone with telecom because they are using different system GSM vs CDMA if there is another GSM operator in NZ, trust me.. the price will be much less than it is now. remember before motor mouth came out, the rate was 1.39 per min or 0.89.. and now its 0.49/min BUT calling oversea is even cheaper than calling local mobile. well for T-mobile or cingular and other companies, at less they sell cheaper & latest phones unlike in new zealand you have to wait for ages for a new phone to release. i remember one TV ad is like this "now calling oversea is as cheap as calling local landline" they made me laugh, this only proof how expensive it is to make local mobile phone call, they try to fool people. o.. and i-mate, the OEM company HTC already have some cool new phones but vodafone is still selling the older version and is twice as expensive.. my friend use GPRS to check his email, 1.5mb and it costs him 15 dollars!!! i hope you dont work for vodafone... :(
