My last comment is..... How long till Telecom also raises it's I'nl SMS prices, just like they did for prepay users in 2001 when vodafones peak was $1.39, Telecoms Peak was 99c. Can't have that!!!!!

3G phones have 130 - 190min 3G talk time, you say? I recently bought a Siemens SXG75 which has 3G talk time of 300 - 360min.

"What an absolute load of rubbish" you say. Where on earth did that comment come from? I have not stated anything about New Zealand getting great mobile deals, I am fully aware that Vodafone & Telecom have a nice Duopoly. :-(

I am fully aware that NZ have some of the highest mobile termination rates in the world & the Commerce Commissioner is currently dealing with that, however both Telecom & Vodafone have made submissions on his Final Determination to government, which wil take sometime to resolve.

As for the 3G "Talk Time" this is specifically stated on the Vodafone website for all 3G models, "officially approved" for use on their network. On their website 3G "Talk Time" is specifically differentiated between 2.5G & 3G. The "3G Talk Time" figures that I posted are "currently" accurate.

The Siemens SXG75 is not on the New Zealand Vodafone website & it's not currently "officially approved" for use on Vodafone's network as per their costomer service rep's.

By the way, I checked out that Siemens phone on their website & it's a mighty fine piece of kit! How good is the GPS feature on it? Also, thanks a lot for posting that link to the Sunday programme, I have been wanting to view that, as I missed the original programme. :-)

I am currently downloading that file & getting 75-80KB/sec with Paradise 2Mbit ADSL. Perhaps the server was seriously overloaded when you tried??

That sounds perfectly legitimate to me. I understand that Telecom's International txt is inferior when compared to the arrangements that Vodafone have, which would explain why Telecom haven't increased their International txt, as they don't stand to lose as much money.

Oh, lucky for him, I would love to go their one day, so much history! I thought China had a good network over there, maybe he is in an area with dialup only. :-(

Its working fine here now. I'm on ADSL, 1mbps down and 512kbps up - none of this 'fair use' or data limit "stuff" which seems to plauge New Zealand providers. Roughly downloading at 93kb/s.

Sometimes (usually during 5-8pm), international traffic is really slow though it varies. The latency that we get in New Zealand (roughly 50-80ms) on ADSL isn't here either - I can connect to CS servers at around 15ms (local in Tianjin) and around 20-40ms for servers based in the other major cities.

Network-wise, its fairly decent though there are some real dirty hacks in regard to both mobiles, landlines and ADSL. Most people use broadband (either ADSL, Cable, Eithernet) rather than dialup according to the government. When I was looking at internet access - this ADSL plan was cheaper than getting Dialup here!
Cheaper by far than New Zealand so far - calling is so cheap, I don't usually worry about how long I talk on the mobile there.

Off topic, but very interesting nonetheless. Thanks for the information. With regards to latency, obviously they have removed interleaving off their ADSL connections?? Something I look forward to when TelstraClear finally release there UBS plans.
