Tis funny how things come full circle.

IIRC Vodafone was the first in New Zealand to have no-term contracts generally across the board. These were a point of difference at the time. Then (I think as a result of not being able to lock handsets) there was a silent migration to term contracts of 24 months (yuck!) and then 12 months for some plans.

Meanwhile Telecom now has all XT plans as no-term unless I'm mistaken! Special plans excepted, and you can choose to contract for 12 or 24 months but for a pathetic handset subsidy in my opinion ($40 for 12 or $80 for 24 months).

That's only applicable to One Rate 50. The higher end plans have higher handset subsidies - e.g. on One Rate 180 ($79.95/mo) the 12 mth subsidy is $100 and 24 mth subsidy is $220

Hi,

Does anyone know what the per minute charge is for calls once you have used the included minutes? Can't seem to find it on the SIMple site :)

allstarnz: I fail to see why we are locked in to a contract on Vodafone when we bring our own handset.

There is no subsidy, no advantage at all, but yet they still insist we sign for x months.

THEN once that lapses, there are no incentives to resign to a contract again.

Fail.

To be honest, the handset subsidies aren't that great. Don't feel like I'm picking on VF though, since Telecom and TelstraClear are guilty of the same thing. I think 2degrees are perhaps the most honest - they don't have any.

What I do single Vodafone out for, though, is placing impedements to buying expensive hardware. On Vodafone, to buy an iPhone I'd have to sign up to a 24 month term for $40 a month and still pay $699 up front, or 24 months at $120 a month to pay $199 up front - and if I don't have the upfront I'd have to apply for finance and all that. In the hypothetical scenario where Telecom sold the iPhone, I'd just walk in there and either sign up for a contract - or not - and slam the up front cost against my next phone bill (or next 12, were I so inclined).

Also, if I were to bring my own hardware to Vodafone (or any other phone company in NZ for that matter), I would get charged the same as someone who got their phone subsidised by Vodafone (or ... well, you get the idea). Since you just admitted that the idea behind term contracts is so you can shave the subsidy back off the lifetime of the contract, why is it that someone bringing their own hardware also has to repay the subsidy? After all, they didn't get one! Where's the incentive?
