Hi all,

We're currently with One NZ on an older HFC connection. A few months ago they advised that the HFC service in our area is being retired and offered credits to move to fibre.

However, they've now told us that we'll need to pay around $399 for a new ONT installation. Their explanation was:

"As per Chorus records, an ONT is already installed at your property and is currently connected to another broadband provider. Therefore, if you wish to proceed with a fibre connection with One NZ, an additional ONT installation will be required."

The property has two flats (we're the front flat and there's a separate flat at the rear).

Is this correct? I was under the impression that an ONT can support multiple providers and that there can only be up to two services connected per ONT. Has anyone been in a similar situation or knows whether this charge is legitimate?

Thanks!

Okay.

First of all, where is your ONT? It’s not the TC4400(the grey modem that your router plugs into), it will be a white box also on the wall. If it’s not there go question 2.

Two, is this a legally sub divided property? If also no that’s why. You don’t qualify as the first install was done on the property at the front. If we actually are a legally sub divided property go to question 3.

Can you prove it with a lot and dp number? You’ll need the legal paper work as this will need to be submitted to your LFC(Chorus or Enable, say now where you are). This would be a address correction, once approved and processed then you can get your free install.

Edit: The process would be an additional ONT, however the magic word is connect to an additional port not ONT. One NZ can do it. You have to be persistent. However the preferred way is getting an ONT for your flat properly for free. Not paying for the additional ONT as they will stick it right next door the current one.

One of my friends had a variation on this - they converted their basement into a separate flat. Council notified Chorus who said they had to change provisioning on the street to accommodate the new dwelling. He was unimpressed because he didn't particular want an ONT there at the time and it his whānau was without Internet for 6 weeks while they changed the provisioning. No charge.
