old3eyes: Does Vodafone's interconnect with other carriers support G722??

AMR-WB (G.722.2) and G.722 are both very different.

99% of links between telcos in NZ are still TDM/SS7 based so interoperability isn't going to exist. Even in the future there is no guarantee of this occurring for a long time as it requires transcoding which means resources have to go into this.

so if Telecom supports HD voice at some point, it will likely still be only internal to each network  i.e. no VF-Telecom  or Telecom-VF HD voice?

Correct. Technically it is possible (and there are providers overseas doing AMR-WB and G722 on the VoIP) but unless they move away from legacy interconnects that won't happen here.

Telstra (oz) bridged HD quality between their VoIP products (all of which use g722 by default, falling back to g711) with their mobile network hd as well. Calls between the two are a beautiful thing.

The sip interconnect drat floating around nz at the moment calls for g711 only, although there was noise and some push to get g722 as the default. It's one of those things though.... Will cost the carriers quite a bit in infrastructure upgrades, but you can't charge for it in a market wanting everything free. So why not just wait till the kit falls over, then upgrade.....

Website states that HD voice only works on Vodafone-Vodafone calls. Presumably that is within NZ.

What about international calls; eg. will HD voice work on a call to a UK mobile?

Would be more useful for me.

It can be enabled with an update. I know there are plans to enable HD Voice on more handsets later this year, but don't have info on which or when just yet.

I'd think it might be enabled alongside the Note II & S III's 4.3 updates, although this is pure speculation on my part & we've not received that software for testing at this point to the best of my knowledge.

Also the website says that you must be on 3G, but kind of hints that this may only work in areas that 4G has been deployed.  Does HD voice work everywhere on the Vodafone network provided you are on 3G, or only on those parts of the 3G network that have been upgraded as part of the 4G rollout?

Hi wongtop

To use HD Voice both parties will need to be in 3G or 3G and 4G coverage, have HD Voice capable phones and both be on Vodafone NZ in NZ.

Hope that helps.

Why was it locked out in the first place?

A VoLTE standard hasn't even been widely agreed around the world, so I wouldn't expect VoLTE any time soon (from any carrier).

A very good question, to which the only conclusiong I can come to is to discourage switching networks if another carrier was quicker to market. As far as I'm aware, there is no technical reason to disable it in firmware, as if the network doesn't support it, it's not like it will have any negative impact, it simply wont be used.
