Handsomedan: I'm still amazed that the average user out there uses less than 1GB a month...

Personally, I struggle on my new plan with 1.25GB + amonthly add-on of 500MB

I'd rather a plan that costs me $50 a month, with 30 min call time and 1000 txts, with 2.5GB of data.

There's not a lot these days at VF to convince me to stay...I can mix and match at other carriers and get more-or-less what I want...and may do so when I decide to get my new iPhone 6...

It's currently much less than 1GB average, actually. It is going up, but purely because smartphone uptake is growing enormously. It's important to remember that Rome wasn't built in a day - our data caps have increased massively over just the last 18 months alone. We're charging less and less to provide much better value, more data and faster speeds and investing heavily in future-proofing our network. If all providers had the same plans and offerings I can't see the point in having different companies. May as well have one massive government controlled Telco. I genuinely believe that Vodafone differentiates itself in lots of ways that improves quality of life for our customers.

I'm in the same boat as you (I use up 2.5gigs almost every month) though I'm glad I've been upgraded to 5GB. Still have one more year left in my contract so will be interesting to see what the situation is like in one year time.

Vodafone has a huge advantage that their data network seems to be the most reliable in West/Central Auckland with plenty of capacity even during the peak. I did a Skype video call last night on 4G in New Lynn and it was pretty good. I am happy to pay a bit extra for that.

If another network offers a better price they will only get my business if I can verify that their data performance is at least on par with Vodafone's. I left Telecom due to poor data network performance (which made the like of Skype video calling nearly impossible) and was very pleased to have significantly improved performance on Vodafone so not too keen to switch back to Telecom.

Agree, I am really pleased with the quality of the network. As a ex-Telecom customer I can attest to the fact that Vodafone seems to be a very consistent performer in terms of data speeds. The investment has really paid off so well done to the Vodafone team.

geoffwnz: Question:
When on an open term plan, should it roll up as the plan changes, or do I have to re-apply for the same deal?
I'm currently on the $29 open term plan but only showing as having 500MB and 150 minutes as opposed to the current offering of 1GB and 200 minutes.

Our team are currently in the process of migrating existing Red customers to the new Red+ plans. Once your account has been migrated, you'll be receiving a text message to advise. :)

Fantastic.  :-)
I shall await the text.
Thanks.  :-)

What is the expected ETA on this migration process?
Is it still in progress or have I managed to miss the cut somewhere along the lines?  :-)

Hmm, that's weird! Pretty sure they upgraded everyone. Are you definitely on a Red plan? @johnr are you able to check what plan geoffwnz is on and if he's eligible for the upgrade?

$29 open term plan.
Pretty sure it's one of the applicable ones.  I may be wrong.  In which case, I'll change to the current $29 open term plan which has more data.  :-)

nakedmolerat: $29 open term is not Red plan

Maybe not, but I believe it was included in the changed plans.
NikT: Prepay $29 and the $29 on account plan have both been updated with 1GB of data as well.

But if not, then my original question stands.  Does my existing $29 open term plan roll up to the current $29 open term plan automatically or do I have to change from the $29 open term (previous) plan to the $29 open term (current) plan in order to get the updated benefits?

So, can we just go into any Vodafone store and ask for our second SIM?

I don't dispute that data caps are on the increase and that the service is good, but with the ability to shop around, I have a far greater ability to get what I want by looking for the deal that suits ME, as opposed to the "average user".

At the end of the day, I have a distorted view of reality, due to having been on the old 3GB/2500txt/60min/1000pxt plan that was grandfatherd a long time ago.
I only changed it to take advantage of 4G and $5 roaming.

Happy enough with my current state, but when I take the plunge on a new iPhone, I'll certainly be looking at who can provide what I want, how I want it...despite having been a loyal customer of VF for a LONG time.

NikT: You like data, we like data. You want data? Have some data. New plans! Red. Now with a plus at the end. Sound familiar?

Red+ 24-month terms

Red+ Open Term plans

Hit the arrows to the side of the open term plan page to see the rest of the plans.

Open term plans (No hardware subsidy):

Red+ Essentials
1.5GB 4G data
Unlimited calling to NZ & Oz
Unlimited texting to NZ & Oz
Free Voicemail
Second SIM to share data
$69/month

More cool things to come for new & re-signing customers, including:

Family Deals

If you sign up to one of the above Red+ plans, and have a family member who wants a Red+ plan on open term, they can have that plan at a discounted rate.

Red+ Essentials Open Term with Family discount - $49/month

Red+ Open Term with Family discount - $69/month

Red+ Super Open Term with Family discount - $99/month

I just found out that second SIM to share data is actually NOT free! This post has mislead me!

Already on Red+? Then it's super easy to add a Red Share Tablet plan. If you are on a Red+ 24-month plan it's included for $0 per month as part of your package. If you are on a Red+ Open Term plan take a look at the plan details on the right.  You then just need to give us a call and we'll add Red Share Tablet to your existing Red+ package.

Apparently as of the first of October the pricing has changed to $10/month for a Red+ Tablet Share SIM - it was previously free, and remains free for 24 month Red+ plans (This was news to me too).

As you clearly contacted us about this before the pricing was changed, we will certainly honour it for you. Sounds like there was some miscommunication with the retention team, which I'm chasing up right now. Sorry for the mix-up.

Is there any confirmation either way on this question?  If I need to reapply for the same plan I'd like to be able to do it before it rolls over and I have to wait another month for it to kick in.

Hmmmm..... I changed my Mini512MB ($10/mth) plan over to Red Share Tablet last week, thinking I could save myself $10/mth. I guess I'll have to wait for my next bill to find out. I suppose worst case scenario, I'm not paying more money but getting extra data on my second device anyway.

Demeter: At least this way they get to do that and get the novelty to wear off without clocking their data in the first week before settling down to a nice comfortable average of <1Gb per month which is what most people use. (No, I am not kidding.)

The main reason they use less than 1gb is because most peoples data cap is less than 1gb and they are afraid to use more
