willnz: Hi Ray,

I do currently have my Linksys ATA connected to my asterisk box at the moment for VFX. And yes, Caller ID does work :)

I was also considering a GSM gateway and TalkZoneZero - but GSM gateways are pretty costly (even for a single port one).

Yes, you can get a VFX line in NZ and use it overseas. You just have to have a Napier address for a Napier number.

Something to remember with GSM gateways is it is possible to get a rebate towards the gateway.  Vodafone looks very favourably on GSM gateways.

For example (I know this isn't applicable to you) but a company who gets a gateway, plus possibly swaps a couple of mobiles from Telecom to Vodafone, plus a couple of resigns, and the rebate could be worthwhile.  I can't give you more definite answers as it's such a sliding scale.

If you need more help, I can give you the details of the brilliant Vodafone rep that we use for all our deals.  PM me for more info.

Just keeping the OT trend going.... just recently we purchased / installed a new GSM gateway, and our Vodafone account manager was adamant that they do not do rebates on gateways.

In their words: "Vodafone does not provide rebates on gateways, therefor it is probably easier to deal direct with [name of gateway supplier]"

Would like to know the name of your brilliant Vodafone rep.

They definitely can offer rebates, we have a really good rep that does all our deals. Feel free to contact me for further info.

Reminds me of the TelstraClear Account Manager a few years ago who said 'No, we don't do Tempest (ADSL) in Porirua".  A few months later, a new AM 'didn't know' they couldn't do it, so asked.  Turns out, for obscure reasons, they could offer ADSL in our Crescent.  We have had an excellent TelstraClear line ever since. Just so my Vodafone rep doesn't get inundated, send me your contact details by PM and I'll pass your details onto him.

Gateway rebates, to me, make perfect sense - when you buy a new phone, if you take out a 36 month contract you get a better deal (a sort of rebate in itself).  If you do the same with a gateway, why shouldn't Vodafone make the deal more attractive?

Just wondering, getting back to the original topic of this thread if anyone can fill us in on what is happening with naked bitstream and the pricing plans. I notice all ISPs have gone quiet over this.

things move slowly. if you look at the Commerce Commission ruling the final pricing is due in December so wait a while more ...look here http://www.comcom.govt.nz/IndustryRegulation/Telecommunications/commissionissuesdraftdetermination.aspx

Around 800-1000, technically. Many of those are in the same building, however.

If theres like say 900 and orcon is doing 60 next year and upgrade the exchange every year at a rate of 60

So we will need to wait 15 years before everything is upgraded?

15 years after that you then need to wait a further 15 years for the next upgrade

Uh....

according to http://www.telecom.co.nz/binarys/wholesale_product_plan_sep_2007.pdf wholesale (basic UBA) naked DSL is available now for new connections and should be available from december for existing connections

That seems unlikely, some exchanges are more financially viable than others and generally they will always get the best and newest equipment. Telecom is rolling out adsl2+ to the main centres and reusing the equipment from those exchanges to bring dsl to new customers elsewhere and I'd expect orcon to do much the same

All seems to have gone quiet on this one. Are any trials underway yet? Or is it all on hold pending Telecom sorting out some issues etc?

Cheers

Perhaps Telecom is waiting till they they have discovered UPS & backup power technology that works!   Have to wonder about the power cut yesterday, apart from the question of whether any infrastructure works in Auckland, they tell us their customers have to pay more because Telecom 'is expected' to deliver superior (how many 9s) service, then that. Undecided
