Telecom will happily accept any Vodafone number and connect it on to any Telecom post-paid or pre-paid service . And likewise, I look forward to WCDMA/GSM from Telecom.

As to handsets I guess it would require the 850Mhz GSM band, with 2100 WCDMA, but I don't see any issue with bringing over an unlocked handset (haven't heard of any from overseas either), but as to Telecom if they will lock their native handsets, I guess we all just have to wait and see.

I think he means will Telecom provide just the SIM, or would you be forced to get a handset from them too when you sign up a new account? I'd imagine they could provide just the SIM -- I can't see any reason why not.

I was asking whether I could just buy 5 SIM cards, but I had forgotten about the issue of needing 850MHz-capable handsets.

I don't think any of our 5 handsets are capable of working on that band because most of them are only Dual-band with a couple being Tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz.

Bummer! It looks as though I'm caught between a rock (Vodafone) and a hard place (handsets that won't work on Telecom's new network)

As I said, I see no issue with using an unlocked handset, hence I believe there will be SIM only deals / BYO handset (no doubt people will want to change numbers, and reconnect old devices at some point anyway).

If you have a WCDMA handset, I guess you could use that in the major town's and cities with WCDMA 2100 coverage, but for the 900Mhz band, it will be interesting to see if the comcom rules that Voda must make roaming on their network available to Telecom as an access seeker.
