It is actually slower over my 1Gbps Ethernet - peaked at 20MB/s - avg 14 MB/s and trace route is the same:-

Bolded (that a word?) is the paid peering link in that trace. So, UC is paying to make the file available, and Vocus is paying Vodafone for the privilege of handing it to Vodafone. Vodafone is paying to transit that from Auckland to Wellington.

When testing to servers that are not Vodafone, there is about a 10 second delay to start the test.

If you _really_ want to profile what your performance looks like, forget about just using speedtest. What you need to do is install wireshark and do a capture of the download traffic. You will then need to isolate the TCP thread of interest (I suggest finding a nice largeish file somewhere - possibly need to be 100MB or more to show lots of detail and do NOT save to disk - you're already thrashing that with the packet capture - save to Nul) and examine the performance over time. Wireshark will show you sliding window behaviour, slow start and additive increase behaviour and you will be able to identify the amount of packet loss.

I've done a LOT of proper testing on high speed broadbank links (many people refer to them as gigabit) and it's nearly impossibly hard to get ordinary users to troubleshoot what they often perceive as issues. A simple speedtest won't do it. A download won't do it, iperf TCP and UDP tests won't do it.

What will point you in the right direction is a deep understanding of how TCP works, what the congestion window is an how it's affected by varying initial parameters that differ between OSes and even versions of OS, and the skills to take and analyse the packet captures you get while downloading from various sites.

Now if all that sounds too hard then I'd agree - I can do it, several people can do it. Can many people do it? No. Can many Geekzoners do it? No. Can most network engineers in ISPs do it? No. It's hard and you're looking for such tiny effects that it' takes good experience to identify signal from noise.

Also, of the approx 12-15 'gig' performance issues that have been escalated to me, not one of them turned out to be network related. Every one that we diagnosed (a couple 'self resolved') ended up being an issue on the customer network (Their router, switch, cabling, PC, OS, network card, drivers, add-ons, AV software, CPU, RAM, disk etc)

Unless you're prepared to do roughly the above, this will probably continue to go in circles.

I can't be bothered going back and reading this thread to find this answer, but humour me.

Get the windows 10 Ookla speedtest app and remove the browser and Flash from the equation. Just try it.

Sorry, just downloaded again in about 15 secs and it was reaching 45MB/s download speed
