Vodafone, seriously, whats up!? Why do I only get close to advertised speeds using ONE particular Speedtest server, and the server I was told to use for "Accurate" speed tests? Any other server, I get less than half of what i pay for, when I test out of Wellington, even more. Why does it feel like the pipe to the ACSData server is clean and empty to get me the best results, then real world servers and services are slow and sluggish? The upload speeds are also very inconsistent, and even on the optimized server I get far less what I pay for. Real world speeds on thing's like Steam, Origin and torrents and normally no better than when I was on 100/10 Mb/s. At time they are pretty good, but then they plummet. what does happen when I get a good speed while downloading, it ramps up nicely, I smile, then I watch it fall down, often to a crawl of KB/s, I change download servers, same thing. Why does Speedtest default to Auckland severs when I am in Wellington? Why does the distance to servers say 50 miles sometime's to Auckland servers and 300 miles to Wellington? Vodafone, what gives?

Now, for the naysayers, before you start saying thing's like "those speeds are better than what most get" and "you don't need 1000Mb/s in the real world..." etc etc, just don't, I pay extra for these speeds, I know the T&C state something like best case or whatever, but like the "Krapi Congestion" thread, there is something wrong here, maybe not to the extent of Krapi, but I fear we will get there.

Actually, claiming that you pay for those speeds is a very tenuous argument. As for what's happening, I suspect you don't know just how many things have to fall in place perfectly to get those above 900Mbps results.

Try using beta.speedtest.net, and try using the windows 10 Ookla speedtest app as well.

But mainly, (and you don't want to hear this), 'gigabit' speeds are so dependent on many factors and you'll almost never see anything like that. The fact that you can see even one result with those speeds shows that there's likely nothing inherently wrong with the access service as designed, built and provisioned.

For more than that, you're at the mercy of physics, TCP and economics.

Cheers - N

i hate Vodafones name for their cable plan

what are your real life experiences like outside of speedtests?

any you seem to be one one of a few that have/are having issues. so seems more like a localised issue than anything else

Of course it'll get to that extent, it's Vodafone we are talking about here. I'm still on VDSL with another provider and will be sticking with it until fibre is available. Vodafone will never get another cent of mine and you should know better than to expect anything but trouble from them.

They are probably running ambitious contention ratios upstream, combined with poor peering. The wheels will come off. Then they will put them back on for a few months. And then they'll fall off again.

Move to another provider get connected to xDSL and leave capacity for the others if it bothers you so much, I am on a ADSL2+ connection here in Milford and have no issue with speed, Could even connect up to fibre if I wanted to but don't want the Internet ruling my life

Like I said, it's a "best effort" service. No speed will be guaranteed.

Its a best effort yes. Vodafone can only provide the service to your house from their network. What lies outside their network is something out of their control. E.G: Slow speed test server, congested offshore link.. the list goes on.
To achieve Gigabit in every instance is impossible. Most web hosts only have a 100Mb/s uplink, Before you factor in the path to get to it.

In other words you are paying for bragging rights and a speed test server result.

Merry Christmas, from Vodafone. 1000/100Mb/s plan tested on a range of servers all over NZ hard wired to Modem. The last test is to the server that Vodafone tell me to test to, the only server where I get results close to what I would think to be acceptable. Its getting worse by the day and real world performance is still below when i was on 100/10 Mb/s, where is the upgrade I paid extra for?

Ive always wondered which server to choose when doing speed tests. I.e. is it best for me to choose wherever I think stuff and geekzone and a few other websites are hosted from or just ping somewhere obsecure like hobart.   :-)

It's very hard for an ISP to guarantee performance outside of network elements they control. One could speculate as to why the results to other servers are lower, but it'd only be speculation unless you have visibility of the VF network.

will I had constant 100/10 Mb/s on my last connection with mostly excellent performance. I then paid extra for a upgrade. I bet everyone here defending Vodafone would not be saying all the tech mumbo if they were always having poor real world performance.

Oh I'm not defending them. But (and this is the same with any provider) - it's a "best effort" service like I said above. If you want a guaranteed 1000 down etc you'll be paying far more than you do for it now.

Does not getting 1000 down in a Speedtest every night really upset you that much? If so, log a fault with Vodafone. Personally myself, I have far more important things in life to worry about. But that's just me.

All of that shows one thing to me - the limitations of speedtest.net and associated servers (some of which will only be on 1Gbps connections) and not to mention the fact speedtest seems broken as of recent using a browser unless you're using the beta. The fact you're the only person on here suffering such issues suggests that the cause is quite possibly related to your equipment and/or PC rather than anything on Vodafone's network.

How many PC's have you tried to exclude the fact it's not simply your browser and or PC?

At the end of the day you're on a best effort connection which can no longer be sold as Gigabit anyway.

@Scotty1986 have you called and logged a fault? if not why not?

if you have, what have they said?

moaning on a forum doesnt usually get you very far unless that ISP has a reasonable presence on there, and on this forum Vodafone do not due to various reasons

Haha log a fault with Vodafone support!? Please..... That's a joke right? I have a better chance of my cat fixing Cable issues than Vodafone support. I have been with Vodafone long enough to know not to waste my time with Vodafone support. In the past, I have received far better support here. Also, It's good to gauge how many other's are having issues, and from ready a couple topics on these forums there is a fair share of them.

At what time did you do these tests?

I do note that apart from the last test with a low ping the others suggest the Speedtest may be routed via Auckland considering the higher Ping Results.

This would suggest there is congestion in the Wellington Auckland back haul, and then perhaps more to the other sites you tested to via Auckland.

I presume they provide their own back haul.

As others have said it is a best efforts service so you must expect the type of results you are seeing.

However I must ask, why oh why do you want 1 gigabit connection, what do you want to use it for?
