Okay... the bad news,

Sorry but at this stage we will not be able to host a mirror for this, basically at this point it didn't stack up for a number of reasons, we did look at it but unfortunately we won't be hosting a mirror at this time.

Yes I am a employee of WxC (My Profile) ... but I do have my own opinions as well

Thanks 4 the update.
At least we know what the status is now.

What would be the criteria to get it up & running? (more interest/demand? more space? logistical?)
Alternatively, what can we do from this end to set it up? If we do set something up amongst the users, what needs to be done to limit it to XNet users (free traffic criteria), or if that's problematic, to get the traffic to the mirror 'discounted'?

There seems to be enough interest in the community itself to get the ball rolling, and we'd like to get the ISP on board (even if they do not wish to take charge)

If you have any alternative ideas, please advise

Good to know Phil,

As i've already told you I can happily host the server myself... Maybe even I can host it on my Xnet Connection at home when i get around to getting connected. The only thing that would worry me is traffic usage... Xnet peers at the APE correct?

Could it not therefore be set up so that a server hosted in the APE be allowed free trafic for xnet?

Possibly we can even get some donations towards this server if it is wanted enough (which I'm sure it is)

Just been having a look around and if I can organise to get a free co-location in the city then it may sound like the free hosting project can go ahead. All xnet have to do is allow free traffic to the APE

(If they can do so without incurring too many costs)

I was just about to say I have a 100mbit symmetrical connection at my disposal, but then couldnt xnet just make traffic to the citylink ftp mirror free? Its the same as one of us setting it up, except its already in place and we dont have to maintain it.

The thing with the citylink mirror is that there is not a big range of distro's on there...

I would like to not only provide debian and ubuntu, but gentoo and some of the other distro's out there...

Playing devil's advocate here, but how much is this really worth to you? I mean, a full Ubuntu install is only 700MiB - that's 70 cents of national bandwidth (which usually goes at FLS). Updates - maybe 30MiB (3c) a week? Is it really worth the hundreds to purchase a server (for reference, a 2.4GHz dualcore Xeon with 4GiB of RAM and 2x80GB SCSI HDDs set me back $600 off Trademe towards the start of the year) and the $100 or so a month to pay for the colo (minus any bandwidth charges)...?

At most I can see this saving the average person $1 or $2 a month; even if you're a corporate user with 20 PCs, it'd surely be much easier to setup a shared apt cache than to go to the effort of running an apt mirror :S.

Just quietly, I'm making this post from a personal perspective as opposed to that of an Xnet employee ;).

Thing is I don't just want to set up a server for ubuntu... I want to set up a linux mirror for many distrobutions...

I am also looking at getting the co-lo done for free through donation and peering is free according to broadband.net.nz... if this is the case then the only cost I will incur personally is the server (no problem) and the intl bandwidth which is cheap...

Well, testing the new version can be between 10 - 100 mb per day, so a bit more than you are guessing for me. In my flat there are three different computers that can't be apt-caches - one is Hardy AMD64, one is Hardy i386, one is Intrepid i386.

Maybe stick to the Top-10 or 12 distro's, and add the rest as demand increases.

The issue, I think, is to have a local kiwi redundant server on the XN n/w, to serve the XN users, therby doing away with apt-cach(es), keeping distro's & sources currrent & making XN more appetising to linux users.
This may only be a starting point.

I'll be @ the RMS meet on Sat, so I'll put my money where my mouth is to whoever is taking charge & I'll throw in a coffee/beer as a sweetener.

Anyone game?

just remmeber that the info has to get to the server to start with? at some point the repositories are going to need to be downlaoded from overseas at a cost.... this is a nice idea, but as FRiO has already pointed out, bandwidth is cheap as so the ROI is poor/none.

however, you might want to call/email the guys at gamesplannet... they have a free local traffic agreement with xnet users and they have heaps of space for demo's etc, whats a few dirtos going to cost them....
