My brother works for Vodafone in Chch. He has just been told that only 17 people will be remaining in the contact centre there once the cull is complete and he will be one of them (the price of being a good performer). However he will no longer be employed by Vodafone but an out sourcer and will be getting a pay cut to boot. He can't apply for volunteer redundancy and if he quits he will get nothing.

I haven't spoken to him directly about it so I'm not sure on the exact circumstances around his change in employer. Bloody unimpressed though.

IANAL but this looks illegal to me, they can't arbitrarily reduce your terms and conditions of employment and not offer redundancy, unless he signed an employment contract that has no redundancy provisions in it.
Your brother, in my opinion, needs to see an employment lawyer.

I agree, that's illegal. I believe something potentially has been lost in translation though. He should clarify in writing what he has been told.

Globalisation has been a great thing. The world is a smaller place, we enjoy the ease of buying offshore. This example is no more than that. The obvious argument will be NZ is losing employment opportunities, and while that is correct, we are merely importing a product, such as NZ owned, Chinese made Haier whiteware. Its just the way of the world these days

Are you sure Haier is New Zealand owned? I though it was the other way around and Haier is Chinese owned and owns part of F & P.

Correct. Haier is a Chinese company, and it owns F&P.

I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. Yep as described this is illegal in NZ. I"d expect he is entitled to redundancy. Double check the facts and talk to the union/ a lawyer

Having worked at Vodafone and been subjected to a restructure in the past, the ship VF Reorg is not averse to sailing close to the legal wind and its moral compass has fallen overboard.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?
