I do find it interesting that for all the time the TV is switched to the channels listed above there is very little desire from my family to be able to record those channels.. on the other hand there is quite a bit that gets recorded from the freeview channels. So what does that tell ya??

You should buy a few 1TB drives, record the above channels for a whole week, then play them back and leave them on repeat to keep the family happy. I do understand, Playhouse Disney in our house (3 under 5) is one that is watched a lot, but never recorded.

Similarly in our house Cartoon Nickelodeon and Disney are never recorded. Perhaps because they repeat shows so often you can always catch a re-run. Would not waste space recording them (nor E!)

lchiu7: Nothing official but I have heard from reputable folks at TCL it will be a PVR. Not that it is possibly germane to this particular conversation but I have heard of situations where the PVR is a networked PVR - the content is actually stored on TCL servers. With the sort of handwidth a cable can deliver (especially when they go DOCSIS 3.0) that would make sense. Store all the content on their servers and just allows you view what you subscribed to via streaming.

I think this is an interesting concept - the 'PVR' boxes wouldn't even need hard drives, you'd just be able to stream content on-demand. You wouldn't even need to 'record' anything, you could just scroll back through the TV guide and select any program for viewing. Kind of like the in-flight entertainment on long haul flights.

Downloadable content direct to the box is the killer app for a PVR. In this respect TCL do have the huge advantage of their own broadband network to deliver this.

The wait will be worth it!

this is not the unit they have been prototyping ... hopefully they do talk to Australia and actually utilise their testing and research! The current test box definitely had a hard-drive and was more of a MySky operation ... hence the same specs of record two channels and watch another etc
TV features such as:

Pausing Live TV.
Fast forward and rewind of Live TV.
Recording more than one program at a time.
Series recording.

TV control features:

Future control of recordings via the internet.
Broadband applications on your TV.

STB Features:

HDMI and Component output.
Large Hard drive for storing recorded TV shows.

High Definition features:

Exclusive HD content using TelstraClear high bandwidth network capability.

not many of these relate to the Aussie concept.

think thats called fast forward...

Think any Digital TV supplier that offered a feature to skip ads to its customers would find it suddenly very hard to purchase the rights to broadcast any channels
