Thanks, seems the best way to go but availability seems scarce at the moment.

any hints on tower locations (for antenna alignment)?

https://powertec.co.nz/ is the place to purchase Cel-Fi. I supply and install these, but unfortunately not in your area. Antenna alignment will depend on your carrier, dominant cell tower location etc.

Ive ordered one from Ascent - https://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?itemID=488761

slightly cheaper than PBTech, and still cheaper than replacing all the handsets.

I have to be honest, I am disappointed in Vodafone's response to how they're shutting down this service.

My mum who lives up north had bought a phone not that long ago (prior to the announcement) and despite VoWifi being supported in the firmware, is not enabled for VoWifi use on the Vodafone network. The options are there in the menu, but it doesn't register, presumably requires vodafone to support on the backend.

I'm disappointed that Vodafone has decided to make this decision to cut service with so few supported models. Basically if you don't own selected Oppo, Samsung, or iPhone mobiles, you are SOL and will have the service turned off, needing to purchase a new phone again.

I feel like at least an offer of a discounted handset or something would be reasonable. Mum bought her new phone with the impression that the SureSignal was a product that was going to be continued to be supported with no hint of it being discontinued, and had been using it for years. My understanding is she only started receiving messages about this a few months ago.

Linux: @Aaroona Is the handset supported on 2degrees for WiFi calling?

@Linux not sure, trying to find a list for 2D supported handsets - its a Xiaomi RedMi Note 9S - probably unlikely I would imagine. Think it will be a new handset type deal sadly.

My Xaiomi MiMix3 was unable to do wifi calling on both VF and 2D.

And that was with the carrier check disabled and enabled.

Rough Vodafone.  Really poor effort to get more phones enabled before this date.  Looks for the last 6 months not much has changed and very narrow scope.  My family own Google Pixel's - Some of us Vodafone have better phones than you offer.

Can I just say too, we have vistors, have kids($), also have works phones.  One cant control all the devices that need to be supported.  I have a booster, always thought these where near illegal to run as the can mess up others.  The dust got blown off mine before...

A shame those 5hz Vodafone wanted will cost them more than what we all care about eg 5g/data speed. And with eg 2Degrees having better device support on day one its forcing peoples hands.  Boosters are not cheap either, or atleast give us an appoved one.

What about eg power/water meters??

But, this morning, surprised not see others say this.  It was turned off my home 8.30 this AM.  And there at 10AM ish, its back all live again.

Anyone care to share any info around this AM?    ....Maybe others didnt like they had services like 111 pulled out under them?

I do not work for any Telco but:

  • My understanding is that the underlying infrastructure that powers "Sure Signal" was end of life a few years ago, which creates issues regarding hardware/system failures.
  • A like for like replacement isn't available/viable on future network implementations, given that 4G/5G is a very much packet driven future.
  • Vodafone have been been advising that Sure Signals are end of life, including putting stickers on the boxes advising that service shutdown would take place end of 2021.
  • Vodafone have been sending out warning messages to devices that attach to "Sure Signal" stating that they are going to be decommissioned.
  • Criticism regarding Wifi calling and compatibility is fair in my opinion. Vodafone internally would have had some time to get ready for Wifi calling / getting as many devices supported as possible. Granted - Android and Wifi calling is a mess.
  • Once on Wifi calling, the service is rock solid. I spend close to 1-3 hours per weekday on calling and it is excellent. It does pay to insure that you have good wifi signal throughout the home and some mesh devices/band steering can cause issues.
  • Running unlicensed boosters - it is a risky business. Boosters can interfere with the mobile networks (and other RF users) and can result in a rather unpleasant visit from MBIE.
  • Remote read Power or Water meters should not be provisioned on the basis of "Sure Signal" availability.

The way VF slow-rolled the comms on supported devices is a disgrace. They killed the service while a long list of phones are still months away, coming into Christmas.

The canned response seems to be, buy a new phone. Luckily I get a Spark signal at home so bye bye to all of my Vodafone service. I'm saving a pretty penny as well because with the Vodafone TV shutdown also announced I took stock of what I need and chopped half the bubdled channels they flogged. Plus Spotify and Netflix discounts. It was a no-brainer.
