Well, like I predicted, it's a big fat fail. Seriously, this was promised for the second half of 2007! That's 2 years ago! What a crock. TelstraClear proves once again that they can't do anything right. Well done Dr Freeth. Bravo.

Now is a good time to remind everyone that the 10Mbps plans haven't changed for 3 years bar a price inrease.

I think it is about time they consider upgrading some of their plans.

The reason you're not seeing price movement is the fact that TCL are cheaper than directly competing ULL products such as Orcon's.

They believe people are already getting value for money and performance. While that's the case you won't see anything changing.

The reason you're not seeing price movement is the fact that TCL are cheaper than directly competing ULL products such as Orcon's.

They believe people are already getting value for money and performance. While that's the case you won't see anything changing.

I think their cable service is surperior to anything else available. Everytime I consider changing (i.e. bigtime) I shudder at the decrease in speed I would experience.

Nothing seems to be said about the all important International speed???
In reality for a lot of us NZ speed can be hyper speed, but as soon as we leave our shores its crap..regardless of what plan we are on. Interesting for Freath to go on about the fantastic uses of fast broadband, but he clearly doesnt seem to want to understand what happens with International traffic which is the bulk of our useage.

TCL have plenty of international bandwidth, that's hardly an issue.

What I believe they have made a fundamental mistake with however is their approach (which is the same downfall XT fell into) of putting too much emphasis on speed.

DOSCIS3 does deliver 100Mbps internet. The reality is the internet itself can't deliver 100Mbps to all users. There will be disappointed users who start complaining when they don't get 100Mbps to every site on the internet because TCL hyped the product up. You start coming up against phyisical limitations such as the LAN speeds and HDD speeds of remote machines.

I find Dr Freeth's attitude in that article disgusting. It comes across as though the only reason this upgrade is being done is to lobby the government into not putting fibre in so they don't have to properly compete. And maybe that'd be okay except when was the last time TelstraClear actualy invested in some infrastructure and increased the size of their network to take in the areas of Wellington not covered by their existing network?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I haven't seen any new cable put in since they were called Saturn. Right now living just outside existing cabled areas I'd be pretty pissed if the govt announced that they were going to scrap their fibre initiative in Wellington because of this.

I do however have a little faith that Steven Joyce will not be swayed by such an obvious ploy (at least it isn't Maurice Williamson in charge).

I totally agree though.

And before anyone else gets at me yes I think all other Telcos are guilty of the exact same lack of investment...

It'll be the services that they deliver on the 100Mbps that will make it successful or not. If they just say "Here's 100Mbps - go for it", then there's not a lot of point. Youtube doesn't buffer on my 10Mbps connection and most downloads are pretty quick and constrained only by server-side bandwidth.

So if they can provide some sort of killer app that makes use of the 100Mbps, they'll be in business. TV-episode and movie downloads come to mind.

Also, our house (like many, I think) has WiFi, which is supposed to cap at 54Mbps, but in reality only gets half that at best. So the 100Mbps is wasted, unless I either wire the house or upgrade to 802.11n, which has only just come out of draft.

Mind you, by the time they actually roll out the 100Mbps, maybe everyone will have 802.11n.

Another point; how much in terms of variable costs does it effect TC's profit by putting customers on the faster speeds?? If the equipment is there, why put a huge barrier ie. massive expense - to customers wanting the increased speeds!?

It's a classic business strategy to tier your pricing so that no matter what the client's budget, they can buy the product - thus maximising revenues. The people who pay more getting the better service. Same thing happens with a lot of businesses.

Having said that, the 25Mbps pricing seems to indicate they don't want many people to use it. Maybe they don't have the backhaul to support it with their current DOCSIS2.0 standard?

Well said. I am on the 80GB plan and don't complain about the price - because it serves me well. Even though I am heavy user here, I wouldn't plan to move to 25 Mbps because of the price. Even if it means downloading an iTunes movie faster - I can just go have dinner while the movie is downloading on my 10 Mbps connection.
