Johnr is correct. There's the whole infrastructure (hardware and software. permits, etc) to maintain, plus ongoing costs human resources.

Also there's the cost of sending messages to other networks. Vodafone (with f, not ph) pays a "clearance" company to send messages to networks outside New Zealand (not sure if they have to for Telecom New Zealand). There are probably very, very few operators that can send directly to one another.

Also, the calculations I put in my post are for the price, not the cost.

And please let's go back on topic.

Ah Ha, my point was not that it costs nothing to run Vodaphone just that the actual cost per TXT is very low compared with the cost of voice ie. a one minute voice call uses up more equipment time than a TXT, therefore less cost per unit in maintaining the service and considering the cost to the customer for voice calls I'm surprised that the don't invite all their customers to the Chritmas party at least.
Trust me, I don't come here to cause offence or denigrate anyone I'm just stating the Bleedin' obvious. :-)

Its an isolated case and shouldn't even raise any concerns as far as im concerned.

Show me several 8 year olds witht his problem and i'll look again.

An isolated case that will no doubt become more and more common, as younger and younger children obtain phones. Resources should be directed into prevention, the worst of come of trying to do something about it before it comes widespread is ‘wasting money’ but if one is wrong, then a while lot more money will need to be spent, on something that could have been prevented. Don’t get me wrong, I am not one for the ‘Big Brother’ approach to things, but if this becomes more widespread something has to be done.

dancers LOL!!!

Maybe people could CALL another when the TXT deals end!! Just like we used to! (off peak for me 6PM - 7AM is 15c to mobile, anytime (italk) 5c to landline and almost every country in the world)

I'm sorry but thats a load of crap. The fact the we hav even one 8 year old getting it then somewhere we have gone very wrong. I know plenty of young children with cellphones and you can garuantee that this is not an isolated incident.
I believe in the hands of teenagers that cellphones are bad enough and cause more trouble than they are worth.

I suffer from bad RSI from years of texting. It causes the most awful pain. Using a keyboard is differcult for me a lot of the time and in my line of work thats not a good thing. This is not something that young children should have to suffer from.

What is wrong with some parents?

I'd be far more concerned as to WHOM they were texting, not "they might get RSI" nee ne ne ne.

some parents should NEVER have kids.
