I am sure Vodafone does not want that outcome no business likes to lose a customer!

Any provider (company) has T&Cs if these are followed you have something to fall back on

If not followed there is a pit fall and this is one of them

Yes it would be great if every system was very flexible!!

And like any other business they spend that money back in the business,

Paying staff
Rent
Power
New sites
New back haul

The list would go on for pages and pages it does not come free

johnr: OK lets track the SIM

Digital mobile order 5,000
First mobile 20,000
Dick Smith 5,000
Future Mobile 5,000
DS wireless 5,000
Noel lemming
Bond and Bond

(figures are pulled from my head guessing)

These are ordered by Head office of these companies and then dispatched by them

Very easy to track

I think the lost number issue is classic example of how business logic fail customer satisfaction, they could just put "hold this number for 12 month before assigning recycle number pool, if there is request for the number reissue the number with new simcard (if simcard is really can't recycled)", well everyone got their reason to do something, in this case i think vodafone was too eager to make fully automated system and now there is no chance to go back now. (yup, i agree that it is really hard to go back than go forward)

anyway, lost number issue wasn't main topic for this thread at all, where the recycle physical material and save the earth things gone? Cry

All that proves is that Vodafone is not particularly smart about the way it does some of its business.

ok... read in about 12 mins, EVDO is faster than I thought!

OK.. this is my view/knowledge...

The amount of simcards used temproarily is huge... remember many are bought by overseas tourists than chucked out when they leave 2 weeks later. (hey it beats roam-forward charges!)
210 - 219 where the first ranges, mine was 021 213 57XX in a GSM Motorola brick I have to this day.
26X, 11X, 00X,02X (the 8 digiters)

They introduced recycling to hopefully avoid the need for more numbers... it was in vain but held it off for a while.

When it started, it was very buggy, I had a free sim, so did a friend. We could do everything without any restrictions but not call out "You are not a valid prepay customer"

there was a 1 month "rechargeonly" time once which allowed customers to reactivate their number. This has ceased.

They now let the numbers sit around for about 6 months to allow the calls and sms messages to stop, then the number is reallocated to a pack.

If you get an 8 digit number, You won't be getting any old calls. the +642121XX range should also be pretty safe too, they are from Bellsouth days.

I do agree that the 1-6 month "rechargeonly" period be brought back.. This was where the billing platform was barred but the simcard was still "on tne network"
It allows those whom geniunly have a number they "just missed" can top it up and reactivate.. I just recently did this to my Aussie sim. (had to buy a $2 sim from woolworths)
Yes... Simcards in Australia are from just $2... from DSE, Woolworths, Big-W and Safeway...

I have a couple of sims that recently expired... $20 per year is long enough, Live with it, I could have thrown abuse at vodafone for it (and I have had some issues in other areas) but this was simply just MY fault... DOH!
