Thing I am trying to get at is that I already have the server and would normally be downloading lots anyway so really I am incurring no costs if the peering is free and I can get the co-location donated...

If by that you mean get something for free we need to get co-location somewhere VERY near the citylink building in the city.. not sure where it is though LOL

I see some of the stuff on her server(s) is slightly dated.
Would it be possible to get her leaded again & somehow get her hooked up to the XNet network?

Most of the work's already done.

I'll try & raise the issue at the next LUG I can find (pretty elusive)

A couple of (possibly) relevant points:

1. You do not need to be near to Citylink in Auckland or Wellington - both are distributed exchanges (over fibre).

Peering is managed through a pair of route servers and bgp.

2. If the fibre runs past your door you can get a connection. Costs are usually lower if it already provisioned in your building.

3. Peering is free as in speech, not as in beer. A Citylink connection will cost you per month for a specified data rate. Traffic to other particpants on the exchange is (usually) free (as in beer).

4. Some participants may charge you to 'take' traffic. Some wil not peer at all.

5. A simple solution to this problem would be for World Exchange to zero-rate content from this mirror, although even at national data rates the cost is not the high.

6. You could ask Citylink if they will host the extra distros you want.

This is the reason that I would have liked to have the server near a citylink building. I work from home and like in the eastern suburbs of Auckland... No fibre here

As I understand it, both Telecom and TelstraClear charge for local content providers to access their networks. And they prefer to have some sort of direct connection to do it.

That is why so many content providers in NZ host their stuff overseas.

This is where we get cheeky and only offer the mirror service to people on the APE or WIX

The only international connection that I would have would be private and only be active to get the updates etc
