mattbush: Nothing seems to be said about the all important International speed???
In reality for a lot of us NZ speed can be hyper speed, but as soon as we leave our shores its crap..regardless of what plan we are on. Interesting for Freath to go on about the fantastic uses of fast broadband, but he clearly doesnt seem to want to understand what happens with International traffic which is the bulk of our useage.

Of all the ISPs i've used over the years - Orcon, Xnet, Telecom, TelstraClear - TelstraClear has the BEST international speeds. For me, there's no such thing as 'peak time'. Out of all the things you could complain about to TelstraClear, I would have thought throughput would be the last thing...!

What other ISP's are investing in (or not) is beside the point. Telstraclear is trying to argue that the governement shouldn't invest in their fibre plan for Wellington and Christchurch because they're suppposedly going to offer this service - even though it doesn't fully cover those regions.

its an argument the government wont listen too so I wouldent worry too much about it. Dont forget these are termed High Competition areas by the Telcos opperating in them so they wont be left short.

The reality is there are very few uses for such a high speed. Those people who say fibre is essential also overlook the same point.

Streaming HD content only requires around 10Mbps sustained which then raises the issue as to whether you need to bother downloading on demand content or simply stream that content directly to the STB.

What internet based products and services both now and looking forward to 5-10 years from now are really going to need more than 50Mbps of sustained bandwidth? Everybody talks about products such as video conferencing, remote medical imaging and the like but none of these need anywhere near 50Mbps now.

There is a big BUT to this argument, your points are valid as long as we are talking about internet access, the problem here is we are not. Telcos are looking to become more content providers than services, the wire you end up getting going to your house will not only give you internet but phone, television, paid TV, security systems etc.. This is where Telecom has actively been heading and from what I have seen inside the industry Telstra Clear as well. In 10 years time you will find that 100Mbps wont be enough, they know this already hence all the Fibre to Premisis trials the telcos have been conducting.

I'd be interested in looking at countries where 100Mbps speeds are being used right now - Japan, South Korea, others??? What do they use that speed for?

South Korea of course has a huge internet-gaming userbase, but I wonder what else that bandwidth gets used for?

But my point was none of these applications require the sorts of speeds. They are all reality now. VoIP and IPTV are easily delivered, security requires minimal bandwidth (even looking at cameras), home automation requires minimal bandwidth.

What applications are there in the forseeable future are there that will actually require 100Mbps to a household?

DOCSIS3 is a fantastic standard and can deliver fantastic speeds, my key point further back was that TCL seem to be focussing on speed as a selling point which will only end up in potentially disappointed customers.

In the second short video I posted Dr Freeth says "if you are a gamer, more importantly if your children are keen on gaming"...

Why is that companies still think that only teenagers play games? Don't they realise adults are the ones playing online games, and a high percentage of that are women? Go broken marketing...

Oh I dont know on a DOD custom server it would be nice to download customised content before the game ends which cant be done on my current 7Mbps speed.

I dont need more speed, I need a higher cap. 80GB is no where near enough, I go over every month so my $149 plan usually costs me closer to $200. Its expensive but if you want to download a heap of content in this country you have to pay.

itxtme: Another point; how much in terms of variable costs does it effect TC's profit by putting customers on the faster speeds?? If the equipment is there, why put a huge barrier ie. massive expense - to customers wanting the increased speeds!?

Intresting food for thought (price per gb)

HighSpeed 10G $5.50
LightSpeed 20G $4.00
LightSpeed 40G $2.75
LightSpeed 80G $1.87
WarpSpeed 120G $1.92

Actually it looks like you pay $60/mth access and $1.14/Gb for Lightspeed.
Highspeed looks like you pay $15/mth less for the slower speed.
Warpspeed looks like you pay $30/mth for the faster speed.

It looks sensible to me, if you want higher speeds you should be willing to pay a premium for the product relative to slower products.

Good luck finding a server with >25Mbit upload (gotta have some for each user). Infact I doubt many would have 7Mbit even.
