jpollock: It's performance in general. ?Witopia and other VPN providers exhibit the same behaviour, as does Amazon EC2.
jpollock: Just to keep nagging... ?Did you get an ETA on when they expect to hear from the upstream provider?
jnawk:jpollock: Just to keep nagging... ?Did you get an ETA on when they expect to hear from the upstream provider?
Nope. I asked Gary today about it, and he is getting in touch with the "tech team".
I also reminded him about my officially stated, not idle threat that if the issue isn't resolved, then I'll switch.
I'm thinking about WorldNet Naked DSL - anyone have any thoughts?

I don't mean this to sound like an ass, but if you're upset with the level of performance you're currently getting - then I _seriously_ wouldn't consider WorldNet.

ps, unless you were trolling, in which case... Well done sir, you got me :-)
jnawk: Well, I'm upset that my connection, which is _supposed_ to be 15mbit/sec gets 3.5mbit/sec to the USA and 2mbit/sec to Europe.
And no offence, but Telecom doesn't do Naked DSL to my knowledge, and I don't need (or even want) a landline.
Not really a troll, it's a hard road finding the perfect ISP. I've not switched _ever_, so I have no idea who is good and who isn't. (Except my parents have Xtra, and its rubbish, but they are in the sticks, so I don't really put all that much faith in their speeds).
Hey, Gary - could you sell me 2mbit/sec symmetrical, and charge me $15/month for 40GB? Or $30/month for 80GB?
That could be a nice solution to the problem.....

I'm not sure if you're serious or just joking but?you have to?remember you're paying for a best effort residential grade service. If you want to place demands on speed I'm sure TCL will provide you with a business grade connection with dedicated CIR, and you'll be paying a lot more than $15 per month for 2Mbps.

I think you are missing the fact that my connection has been verified to be able to deliver 15mbit/sec, even to Europe and USA, but a single TCP session appears to be shaped one way or another, despite their protestations to the contrary. Best effort is not a license to deliver rubbish service.
sbiddle: You're missing the fact you *can* get 15Mbps to the US - while it may not be on a single TCP session the realilty is that speed is obtainable, and IMHO makes your argument of a price reduction rather pointless.
I discussed this very issue with TCL somewhere around 2000 (remembering I was one of TCL's first cable customers circa 1997), but won't be saying any more about the issue. Those within TCL who need to know or are in a position to comment are fully aware of this thread, and I'm sure will comment if they see it appropiate.
sbiddle: TelstraClear don't shape their connections. Period. Full stop. End of story.
The issue also doesn't just affect you. The same results will occur on every HFC connection - this "issue" isn't anything new as I explained above.

Cool, wonderful, they don't shape. So why is my connection not delivering? TCP is just a stream of packets, none of which are altered or dropped (no shaping). The connection is capable of passing those packets at 15mbit/sec, except that is isn't doing that. So shaping *must* be happening somewhere. We've (supposedly) eliminated Telstra. We've also eliminated the server itself, and its immediate upstream. What remains? Telstra's upstream. And now I'm making the same points I've already made and you seem to not be taking on board. Do you perhaps work for Telstra too? (Why else are you defending them, when clearly they are not delivering here?)

Steve does not work for TelstraClear, and this question is against the FUG. You could be suspended or banned for this accusation.
