Crowbar:
Freitasm, quite obviously your issues are separate and not related to free traffic weekend, I thought your rant on your blog was completely uncalled for too.

I've just been gaming (BF3) and its been perfectly fine (capped downloads @ 600kb/s while I was gaming).

So far for me no difference browsing and gaming, downloads are running about 60% of their normal speed.

Pretty happy so far.

yea well for some like me its like 5-20KiB/s downloads and no point trying to game!! i think it comes down to where you live.

Ping time just halved... this is while pulling 1.5mbit on rsync, so it is leveling out. Going to be interesting to monitor over the weekend.

...oh, and ya, MF, sorry you're not getting to join the fun :(  Bummer man!

Cable in Wellington here.

Mine is functioning at varying levels between 10% and 30% of what is usually does on a Friday night.
I can barely pull 2mbps on Telstras speed test.
Actual download speeds vary from 12k (yes...that's not a typo) to around 150k.

Ping reports to be fine, but it isn't really. Online gaming is basically out for the weekend if this continues. I spike from 8ms to over 200ms to the on3network servers.

Ping to my vent server is usually around 50ms, its been over 250ms for the last 3 hours. There's upwards of 10% packetloss creeping into it as well.

Tried to stream some ice hockey from gamecentrelive, even on lowest bitrate that is certainly a pipe dream.

Whilst it is great to hear some people are only 40% effected by this (why anyone thinks that is a good thing makes me boggle) I am not and am basically frothing at the mouth.

What did they honestly think was going to happen? It's like turning up at a boy racer party and giving everyone McDonalds burger trays and a keg of beer each and going "off you go lads!" Whoever at Telstra marketing thought this was a good idea......sigh.

I have to publicly comment on the effort by a few TelstraClear people who are trying to figure out what's going with my connection. Still not connected, but it could well be some hardware problem. If it is confirmed then I will have to wait for a new modem...

7.40 1.93 down 1.98 up
8.40 1.20 down 1.94 up
10.40 1.23 down 2.02 up

But my downloads got nowhere near that.

Wow really? Talk about your first world problems right there. Perhaps you could use some offline hobbies?

Some of the reactions on here are genuinely disturbing... Sure my connection is a bit crap right now too, but it's definitely not going to ruin my night, weekend or life. I plan to be out in the sunshine enjoying the world! I highly recommend it ;)

Wellington CBD

Telstraclears Speedtest results

2.33 Mbps Down
2.03 Mbps Up

I'm on Warp and usually see around 24-25 Mbps on the Speedtest.

Downloading some usenet content at around 300 Kbps which I guess will impact Speedtest ever so slightly but still a pretty poor result even if I added that 300 Kbps to the 2.33 Mbps.

Terrible speed in St Alban's Christchurch, World of Warcraft ping 150ms is now 1500ms+.  Normal download speed of 1.2MB/s is down to 300KB/s, pretty shocking considering we just upgraded to the 120gb plan!

NOT IMPRESSED as we had a weekend of awesomeness planned.

Could everyone in this thread please read this before continuing?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_rate_units

Your understanding as a group of how to accurately describe speeds is atrocious, and not at all helpful if people want to compare what's happening. (some of you are accurate of course)

Lots of sunshine to go out and play in right now isnt there?
If you had plans to go outside and have fun etc but it was raining then it could quite possibly ruin your day, the same goes for the internet being crappy.

Its probably going to ruin my day tomorrow as I am hosting a MW3 lan that I have been planning and waiting for for weeks.

Thanks telstra for the thought/effort but next time please atleast give me more notice so i can plan around the issue or even give me the chance to "opt out" and somehow arrange it so i am not affected by the massive increase in traffic.

[Edited so i was not throwing around words like "guarantee"]

halfbaked: [snip] and somehow guarantee atleast 50% of my usual connection.

I know you're upset, and I know that if they hadn't done this your connection would probably be fine - but don't go throwing words like "guarantee" around when talking about throughput on a best efforts residential internet service unless you really know what you mean.

Cheers - N
