robnz09:

No, I have Gen 2. I’ve only had the unit for about a month post the recent relaunch.

I'm pretty sure you have Gen1 which does not have a microphone symbol on the remote. Gen1 is still being issued with Vodafone Broadband on account plans.

Gen2 was first released with Software Version 5.1.510.06iw(NZ) I believe. It is hardware version NZ-512/131329 I believe.

freitasm:

Just a question - for those of you using ethernet do you have your router set to use "green" ethernet?

I have experienced this issue with my connections tested as follows.

1.Wired Ethernet to Orcon router

2. Wifi activated on Orcon router and VFTV connected thus with my MESH router turned off

3. Wired Ethernet to my Google Wifi router

4.Wifi connected to my Google router (Orcon Wifi deactivated.

Interestingly this morning I tested it before heading out and the VFTV turned on by pressing the power button on the remote and connected OK with my LG TV.

@MikeB4 what do you use for DHCP Server? I assume you have it turned on on one router only, or you have a DHCP Server machine with it turned off on your routers.

@IvanPiacun  DHCP is being handled by the Orcon router.

In addition to my answer to freitasm when I was testing Wifi via my Google router I tested on both the 2.4 and 5.0ghz bands.

I'm really glad that you've done this testing but I'm using mine on Wifi and it would be a major hassle for me to test it with a wired connection.

I was reasonably sure that I don't have any Wifi issues because the VTV has line-of-sight to the router, all of my other Wifi devices work fine, and I live in a beachfront property with only one neighbour within 25m of my house.

Ok thanks. That's pretty crappy as I only just purchased it direct from Vodafone on account so would have expected it to be the latest generation. Will have to go back to them.

@alasta, @NH3Engineer, and  @MikeB4: If the MTU or MRU setting you are running with for your internet on your modem/router is 1500 have you tried running it at 1492 as some devices have problems running at 1500 with some modem/routers and this VTV box may be one of them? I am running with MRU 1492 on Huawei HG659B with Spark with no problems.

If you have problems with an MTU of 1492 you could also try 1490.

@IvanPiacan can the MTU be edited in web view on a Fibre Router? Ithought this was only possible on ADSL set up

On most fibre routers the equivalent i.e. MRU can and results in a reset of the connection and possibly a restart of the router.

Just think for a moment about what’s being discussed here and the posts that lead to it.

How on earth is the average non-techy person-in-the-street going to resolve VTV issues like this? Really, it’s crazy.

Coincidentally our elderly neighbour and friend has just been visiting and mentioned that her 5 year old smart TV no longer supports the TVNZ On Demand app. Someone told her that she needs a Chromecast. I explained and demonstrated on our TV how that works via iPhone or iPad and she frowned - saying ‘not very convenient’. She’s very smart and alert but not really techy.

So I then told her about VTV and demonstrated TVNZOD on our VTV. She thought that looked good and I said I’d be glad to sort it for her.

After she left I thought further and realised that if she has issues with VTV, if I had set it up I’d be continually on-call to provide support and, as much as she’s a friend, I don’t really want to take that on.

So I am now thinking that a SmartVU is what she needs - and although that unit is also possibly not entirely bug-free, it’s probably more reliable than VTV is currently. I just don’t think that in all good conscience I can recommend VTV to her.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Excellent point and you are are right. I would not expect or ask the average consumer/customer to mess with these settings. I would imagine the a large number of ISP support desk managers would not be happy to see there call centre stats tank.

I know that 1500 is a problem for PS3/PS4 (and is what Orcon set some of their routers to) and if this is found to be the problem here then Vodafone can change their device firmware for the Set Top Box to support 1500 but someone needs to try the alternate MTU/MRU setting first.

I won't be fiddling with any settings on my router because I'm on a Vodafone connection with a Vodafone smart hub.

The reason why I exclusively use Vodafone services is the same as the reason why I exclusively use Apple equipment - it should all interconnect seamlessly and avoid compatibility issues or passing the buck when things go wrong.

Just out of interest sake though are you on an MRU/MTU of 1500 though or am I looking at a red herring?

@IvanPiacum mine is set to 1492 which is the default for Orcon I believe.
