Hi Don. Many changes to your service, including upgrading to the new plans, can be done online:

Upgrading to the 100Mbps service: easiest way to do this is through the website, using 'My Profile' in 'Customer Zone'. (Log in and click the 'Order or change products' in the box on the right). You'll receive a confirmation email and a few days later you'll get a call to arrange a day and time for the install.

Telecom has introduced data double ups. Someone on 80gb plan goes to 160gb @ knw extra cost. Come on telstra do the same.

You do realise this thread is discussing a 100Mbps / 10Mbps service? You can't expect to pay the same price as you do for an ADSL2+ ~15Mbps / 1Mbps connection.

ya this does raise the question if it's reasonable to ask for more data without the speed and more speed without the data?

100 is going to mean a new modem, so I totally agree with Steve there, but what about 150Gb at 15/2 for ~$80?

Where's DV?....

How does D2 and D3 co-exist on the HFC?

Would 150Gb plans on D2 introduce congestion for all D2 users no matter plan size?

D, at the start and the end of the day, D2 and D3 modems all still function by asking for and being granted upstream mini-slots for sending data to the CMTS and watching downstream slots for receiving data from the CMTS.
The D2 cable modems are narrow-band TDM transceivers, the D3 CM's are wide-band TDM transceivers.
D2 modems typically have 1 transmitter and 1 receiver (there are some hybrid D2 modems that can lock onto more DS channels).
D3 modems channel-bond across multiple US and DS RF channels, thereby potentially having a wider but more shallow footprint on the RF landscape. More channels to have data modulated over/on = better goodput via the wonders of aggregated spectral bandwidth and stat-muxing gains.

Both D3 and D3 CM's exist and play well in the same RF channels, providing that the D2 modems can be afforded a reasonable feed from the RF hog-trough. It's significantly less invasive for the CMTS to grant a D3 modem slots to move part of its channel multiplexed data on a less loaded channel than it is for the CMTS to 'shift' a D2 CMonto a different US channel based on the US primary being full of D3 traffic.

If you've seen the difference and effect a Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum wireless system can have on something like a frequency hopping system, the DSSS system effectively blankets a portion of the RF space and knocks off frequency hopping systems almost every time. We need to ensure that the D3 CM's don't fog out the D2 modems in a similar fashion.

I have no answers to the questions of "more data at slower speeds", that is product and marketing speak ;)

I suspect it the answer to that will be somewhere between a long time and never - but that's purely from a marketing / business perspective.

You're not going to see 100Mbps UFB plans under $100 as it's a premum service, TCL's 100Mbps offering already offers better value than the UFB 100Mbps offerings. The ISP world is already heading to the bottom of the pit in terms of pricing, products with higher margin are a necessary part of the business.

I cannot see why they would. If you are on a 40Gig plan you would not be able to really benefit from the high speed unless you are quite happy to only use your broadband connection for one day out of the month?

The cap isn't the issue here - it's the fact tha 100Mbps service is a premium product which will always carry a premium pricepoint. TCL launching 100Mbps plans below the $100 mark would be a stupid decision from a business perspectice, since no other telco in NZ offering UFB services is reastically going to go under the $100 mark at this stage.

Out of interest what Modem will be used for the 100Mbps plans?

Also I can only assume for new connections (NON 100Mbps plans) TelstraClear will be installing the new modems, as this would mean you only have to pay for one install and modem.

I don't get it... surely having faster speed doesn't mean you're necessarily using more data. If you are just doing the same old thing online surely it only uses the same amount of data?

My point exactly. I'm not suddendly going to download an extra 60GB of data because my connection can go up to 100Mbps. My data usage will roughly stay the same.
