@IvanPiacun OK Orcon advises that the NF18ACV is the best router they offer for consumer UFB. They checked my unit and all is good and its on the latest firmware. I don't really want to go to the hassle of finding a good new router. If I use a third party router I am more or less on my own as they will have very limited access to diagnose etc.

I do feel the issues being experienced is not with my network set up but lay with in the Vodafone TV device or service.

I believe Orcon only allow their routers to be used for their consumer UFB anyway and don't allow for third party routers except for business. Although I am sure you find it no help hearing that.

If the ethernet connection of the VTV Gen2 STB is still not performing, perhaps the firmware update that is going out today will help. We can but hope.

While unfortunate, it is comforting to hear that somebody else is also having problems with the Orbi...! Hopefully VTV firmware is enhanced further to be able to handle mesh networks.

@liquidcore it is unfair to ask VTV Gen2 STB to work over 2.4GHz just so that it will support Mesh networks that use 2.4Ghz as well as 5Ghz in a single Mesh because the demands of 4K video streams preclude this for the future. It would be fairer to ask the Mesh network providers to support a purely 5GHz Mesh for those requiring it rather than constrainingg users to the past.

@Sansom A compromise could be made by Vodafone if in VTV Gen2 STB Settings there was an option to turn off 4K support which enables use of 2.4GHz frequency WiFi Band as well.

But surely if the VTV can only see the 5Ghz band and the Orbi does band steering which has been keeping all my devices on 5Ghz, it should work better?

But surely if the VTV can only see the 5Ghz band and the Orbi does band steering which has been keeping all my devices on 5Ghz, it should work better?

From the Netgear community:

"The band steering feature encourages dual-band-capable clients to stay on the 5 GHz band on dual-band APs."

Note: However that VTV Gen2 STB is not dual band capable to my understanding and thus the band steering feature of Orbi will not work.

The following parameters control Band Steering in Orbi:

lbd_LowRSSIAPSteerThreshold_CAP_W2=35     (-60 dBm)

lbd_LowRSSIAPSteerThreshold_CAP_W5=20     (-75 dBm)

lbd_LowRSSIAPSteerThreshold_RE_W2=35    (-60 dBm)

lbd_LowRSSIAPSteerThreshold_RE_W5=20    (-75 dBm)

lbd_APSteerToRootMinRSSIIncThreshold=10

lbd_APSteerToPeerMinRSSIIncThreshold=10

lbd_APSteerToLeafMinRSSIIncThreshold=10

lbd_RSSISteeringPoint_UG=10

lbd_RSSISteeringPoint_DG=5

lbd_BTMSteeringProhibitShortTime=15 (when a wireless client connects to AP, AP will block 2.4GHz connection for 15 seconds, thus encourage it to try connecting to 5GHz network first. After 15 seconds, if the client did not join the 5GHz network, it will be able to connect to the 2.4G network.

lbd_SteeringProhibitTime=120

lbd_MaxSteeringTargetCount=1  (maximum number of clients that can be connected to AP’s 5GHz wireless network in priority)

lbd_MaxSteeringUnfriendly=86400

lbd_SteeringUnfriendlyTime=600

multi_ap_disablesteering=0

So clearly there are times where band steering would not work to keep VTV on 5Ghz band, as well.

Hi, seems some confusing details here, if a device is dual band then dual band it is, band steering is a mechanisim where the AP tells the client to bu66er off it it connects to the 2.4GHz channel and hopefully it moves to the next available carrier which is 5GHz, so no need for some clever stuff on the client side.

Based on the fact that many folk have indicated issues even when on wired connections, I believe, and could be very well wrong, that all this fluff about setting the 5GHz channels is just a side show, the real issue is deeper within the VTV network stack, so I suggest just move on from this one and let Voda contractors that directly are involved with the firmware sort there stuff out.

my opinion, YMMV.

I noted that the update was available, and attempted to perform it but got an "Error 030C Software Update Failed" error message after being on 0% update for a long time. Retry did not help.

What does this Error Code mean? Note: I am on Wi-Fi with the VTV Gen2 STB in question.

I tend to agree with this, but based on what has been said in this thread so far it is unclear whether Vodafone staff or contractors are actually investigating the networking related issues that have been raised here.

Orcon allow third party routers they just have very limited access to the router should they need to do dignosis etc if there are problems.

The NetGear Orbi System usually uses the same SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands and this can cause a problem for devices which can only connect on one of those frequency bands. In these cases implementing two SSIDs one for 24Ghz and one for 5Ghz may help. The web page at https://www.tech21century.com/separate-ssid-for-2-4-and-5-ghz-on-orbi/ may help

I believe Orbi usually also swaps channels automatically to improve performance which may cause problems for the VTV Gen2 STB as well. @Sansom may be able to inform you better on this and if there is a way of setting a specific channel at an access point for 5Ghz access.

Hi @IvanPiacun, I believe that the information in that link you provided is no longer current. Latest information I've seen, and confirmed by my own experience, is that even if you follow the instructions and manually rename the SSID's differently, as soon as you reboot, those changes are undone and you end up with the same SSID name for both 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz bands.....sadly :-(

This appears to have happened with the Orbi firmware update a few months back and is particularly annoying as I really wanted separate SSID's for each band. I probably would have gone a different path if I had known they were going to force this limitation on us.

@Bazzi99 Have you tried connecting the VTV Gen2 STB to an Orbi Satellite or the Orbi router via an ethernet cable? In which case you shouldn't have the problems with VTV not connecting on 2.4 GHz. This presupposes that that Orbi will then put the backhaul traffic onto a 5Ghz Wi-Fi channel.

Hi @IvanPiacun & @liquidcore - Sorry, I wasn't that clear in my original post - My VTV Gen2 STB has only been connected via ethernet (to a non-Orbi router) at this stage. Haven't tried connecting the VTV via Orbi wifi yet as I'm still in experimental mode but planning to try it at some stage.

My original comment to you was to let you know that the link to info on changing SSID's on the Orbi's appears to no longer work as Netgear have nurfed it. I can't comment on how well the VTV is working on the Orbi - my experience with a wired Gen2 VTV has been 100% problem free since the stabliity firmware update a few weeks back.

At midnight the You Tube channel would not launch, menu, back, ok, direction buttons, and exit buttons stopped working correctly. Also micro pauses and stuttering occured on vibe.
Icons for programs would not display.

When I switched off and on again I got an SC401 error.

Up until midnight everything was working well except for the usual fast forward and rewind problems.

In the end I gave up and cycled the power thus fixing the majority of the problems.

I then tried the You tube channel an on launch got notification app.not.subscribed error message, which I was able to bypass on retry.

I found the VTV great for watching a recorded T20 cricket match on the weekend.

Bowler runs in , ball goes through to the keeper , quick tap the 20 sec jump , bowler runs in etc repeat

3 and half hour match done with in 2 hours!
