Trying..tried to watch this evening I suffered micro pauses and momentary black screens on multiple channels. This thing is driving me crazy (crazier). My wife feels we should just take the unit outside and run the car over it, many times.

@MikeB4 have you tried doing a Speed test from an Ethernet connected PC just to confirm you are getting the subscribed broadband speed?

Per wired ethernet I constantly achieve over 850mbps download to a wellington server

@Sansom can somebody at Vodafone please help Mike do a Trace Route and Ping Test, if possible, to the appropriate Vodafone servers for channel viewing, around the time when these micro pauses and black screens are occuring?

I don't usually watch live TV (most of our content is consumed via Fire TV) so decided to watch a couple of programs tonight - currently catching up on Britain's Got Talent, and I am not seeing these micro pauses and black screen.

I am with 2degrees - which ISP are you using? Do you use any third party DNS or the one automatically assigned by your ISP?

I am an Orcon customer (gigantic plan) I use the ISP DNS. I never use third party DNS they are troublesome. I get these pauses and black screen several times a week and it usually goes away with a power cycle.

I don't experience issues with any other streaming service or using the internet or internal network.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I've seen micro pauses, not tonight though but haven't been watching. It's just another issue most likely with the CDN end I would think. Certainly not your network.

In the latest firmware has the Gen 2 box been set to force and HDR output to HDR capable TVs? Just noticed that the picture on live FTA is a bit washed out and when I checked my TV it is receiving a HDR signal. I can't see a way to disable it in the VTV settings.

The Apple TV 4K does that by default but you can change that behaviour. It would be much better if it only sent and HDR signal when playing an HDR source.

Whilst a lot of us are frustrated with the product, Mike's problems seem to be a lot more extreme than what others are experiencing. Mike - I wonder if it's worth taking the unit back to the retailer and getting it swapped out? I can't help feeling like this could be a case of faulty hardware.

I think you are right. Unfortunately because it was a low cost item, $170 I never kept the receipt.

If you paid for it on credit card your online transaction or your statement should be sufficient proof of payment hopefully, depending on were you bought it.

Or if you gave your name and phone number at Noel Leeming (if bought there) you are covered.

The main problem will be getting a replacement as most stores will start by saying is your network, then progress to "we need to send for repair or testing"...

I usually overcome this sort of rigmarole by taking along all the printed out discussions, reviews etc that point to the problem being a faulty device.

Update,  the pauses black screens/grey screens are also occurring on "recorded" and catchup/3 day rewind. A power cycle of the VT unit will settle sometimes for a few days or hours. I had considered over heating of the unit. I don't a device to measure the temperature, it does not feel hot to me but my hands have limited feeling. The unit is on a shelf on its own with plenty of space around it and no heat source or direct sunlight. Wellington's pseudo summer has not been warm enough to raise the ambient heat much.

My wife would savage their knee caps if they tried that. 😄

Those black screen issues sound like an HDMi issue.
