mattwnz: Why are they having this free weekend? One reason there are quotas is so usage is controlled. It is a bit like everyone taking out their cars onto the motorway at the same time. It is going to cause congestion.

What better way is there to stress-test your network? If they asked us to help, I would have been too busy. This way I had no choice but participate because everyone else is.

I hope that they're gathering all the stats that they can so they can use the results to improve the network.

heheheheheh.... you're kidding right?

It's an interesting question though.

So far I've been about to pull ~10gb.  So translate that to a 30 day month and we're looking at about 600gb.

Not even close to .au 1tb plans.  So clearly the network doesn't have a patch on what they're building in Auz.

I'm getting so much packet loss in WoW that the latency meter can't even give me a reading. I don't care about unmetered downloads, I just want to do the new WoW content that came out this week so I've called TCL and logged a fault. However, I can't help but feel that I was fobbed off; "call back if it's not fixed by Monday".

Good Morning Guys, our free broadband weekend is proving incredibly popular. As we predicted, the high numbers of people taking advantage of this opportunity to make the most of the internet will inevitably slow speeds and create some congestion. We expect this to be intermittent as demand ebbs and flows, and understand the frustrations this may create for some. Our technicians continue to monitor the network 24/7 and we'll be considering all your comments in our review.

Cheers
Tim.

I don't see what point you're trying to make with that comment.

Aussie having 1TB plans is a moot point. The reality is average customer data usage isn't significantly different between both countries. Infact average data usage in NZ and Aussie aren't really that different to the US.

If you knew beforehand that performance would be impacted and the frustrations it would cause why was the decision made to go ahead with this promotion? There would have been far, far, far better ways of offering customers a Xmas bonus such as offering double data caps for a month, which would have had nowhere near the impact on network performance.

Not being able to do some work last night because RDP performance was so terrible, and resorting to a Vodafone mobile connection because the speeds were twice that of a cable connection isn't what I pay money for.

Very interesting how isolated the "bad" experiences are.

As I've mentioned already - Gaming was perfect as was all other aspects of the internet (including browsing), this was all while I was downloading at about ~800kb/s constantly.

Steam alone has done 22gb (most of which is older stuff so won't be TCL's server).

I am on the (lucky) side of the fence where although speed tests are lower BF3 ran fine last night and all seems fine today.

l3-peer.tlot03.pr.reach.com is running around 9% packet loss.  So if it's loosing 1 in 10 packets then I really would expect your WoW experience to be a waste of time.

How does WoW work?  Is it UDP or TCP transmission?

If it's UDP traffic then you'd be loosing a chunk of the information wouldn't you?

But even if it's TCP, with that much packet loss, coupled with the extra 100ms latency (or is that latency caused by the packet loss, so it's not fair to add them?) I can see how your WoW gaming would be pair shape.

Yes I wonder what's getting the most saturated.

Are the HFC nodes getting hammered or is it just core network that's not stacking up to the job?

"Incredibly popular" - "some slow downs"???? don't make me laugh

for the last 14 hours i have been stuck at no more than 0.54Mbps download! instead of my usual 8.5Mbps  i can barely surf.

rang TC helpdesk and checked the modem etc. their answer "wait till monday"

What happened to the fair use policy of kicking people off if they bring the network down?

Way to go TC to really p!ss off your customers

last speedtest 81ms ping to auckland 0.45Mbps down 2.01Mps up. totally pointless.

I don't know whether it's TCP or UDP; I can chat without issues (although I can see a delay between typing and the text appearing) but all the messages seem to be getting through. I've never seen the latency meter break like this though (it's stuck on 0 ms) so that'll probably be due to the packet loss rather than the increased latency.

I also can't run the loss test on www.pingtest.net, it just fails without giving a result.

Edit: Just saw the post above. My domestic speed tests are about normal, it's just international that's having problems.
