imd6662:

She seems to have a lot of problems with the TV not going, either showing program guide information, or showing Not connected to Internet, or showing CHannel not subscribed (including channels for which she definitely is).

Any suggestions, or at least suggested troubleshooting steps. I think this now qualifies as an 'essential service'!

I would check the WiFi connection because some of those intermittent problems sound like an intermittent connection - we cable our Vodafone box to avoid such issues. Theoretically, 100 Mbps is more than enough but in reality the WiFi signal could be too weak for the bandwidth required. The WiFi space can also be crowded out with neighbours all streaming too.

If she has a smart phone then she could install a WiFi Analyzer app to check on signal strength and contention - I use the open-source VREM but there are other versions that work much the same such as keuwlsoft Wifi Analyser.

Thanks again for the assistance with this.

Latest main problem appears to have been that the batteries in the weeks-old remote apparently gave up so she couldn't even turn the box on!

I suspect that the underlying problem though is a major slowdown in her HFC broadband connection (down to around 26Mbps) which seems to have coincided with the changeover from the T-box/VFTV package to the the new Gen 2 VF TV box. My guess is that low speed and latency issues are producing the no picture, no connection, not subscribed (to TV2!) effects.

It may be that her broadband connection is not slowing down but the WiFi 5Ghz reception may be poor if going through walls or any  great distance.

I take the VTV can't be brought closer to the router, or the router brought closer to the TV. I don't know how we can help though if their are not supplies in her bubble to help with this.

26Mbps should be sufficient if that is what she is getting at the VTV box, as long as she is not using fast forward or rewind a lot which can require bursts of up to about 60Mbps.

By the way please ensure that she is on a fixed channel for 5Ghz, e.g. I use channel 36, on the router settings as Auto can cause loss of connection at times when the channel changes.

@imd6662 Please note that apparently Vodafone had intermittent internet problems yesterday.

I would say that firmware still hasn't been updated. Unlikely to be a battery problem, when this device had original firmware one of the main issues was inability to power on via remote, required a power cycle.

Perhaps unrelated, But with our gen 1, one of the batteries it came with died in the first 2-3 months.

OP said that Gen 2 is cabled to the Linksys.

Just wondering about the setup too. She has an old Linksys WRT-54G router for wireless access for her laptop. That's of course connected to the VF-supplied HFC modem, and the cabled to the VF Gen 2 box. Only 100mMbps but should be ok for all practical purposes including connection?

VTV looks like an excellent product (although with the odd niggle, like most tech products).

I am curious about Chromecast support - from reading some early posts and looking at overseas models I believe the box supports being a Chromecast receiver but this currently isn’t enabled. Is that correct and are there plans to enable this? I know you can cast from apps which have a VTV app. @sansom maybe one for you.

Local co rent was the other one - my grandparents love to look at photos from their iPhones on the big screen. They are currently (I think) achieving this using Chromecast from Google Photos. Would they be able to achieve something similar in VTV?

Casting to the Vodafone TV is supported out of the box.

You don't have to enable it but casting doesn't work from every device that can cast - this is sometimes a problem even with a Google Chromecast. This is possibly why you read that people thought casting needed to be enabled.

Hi, Vodafone TV runs a linux based OS.  So, while it is possible we could turn it into a Chromecast device (just like Roku is also a linux based OS and supports Chromecast), it doesn't use Android TV OS so doesn't support Chromecast natively.   It is a roadmap item for Vodafone Group and so will be added one day.

But @Hammerer is right, "casting" is supported out of the box for apps like YouTube and Netflix, you simply tap the casting icon on your mobile version of these apps and you should find the VTV box in the listed devices if you're on the same LAN.

Ah thanks. Definitely +1 for Chromecast support. Totally agree with the much earlier comment about 20% of people not understanding Chromecast. Would make it a 100% product.

I see in AU their VTV has Chromecast but is actually an entirely different product - it’s an Android TV box.

Any further comment on local content? Or not something being pursued at this time?
