I came over due to the $75 special. I was with Orcon on their $80 special for 30GB that was under a 12 month contract. I just noticed that popping my clear.net.nz email is a bit slower when I was with Orcon popping clear.net.nz email.

More impt., I noticed the webpages a bit slower in opening. It waits a moment before things just happening ...

And are you using the correct DNS?

What router are you using? You, being here for some time now, know all these "why slow" questions always have a first reply with "please post modem stats", so please post modem stats.

I put in the DNS settings just now. When I connected up with Telstraclear, I asked the lady at Technical Support, she said I don't need any settings, only my username and password ...

My stats now, quite a bit slower ... I usually get a 9 or 10. But for now:

I am using the Netcomm router which Telstraclear gave me.

This speed test doesn't tell us much, if anything about what's going on.

The Christchurch server is hosted by Snap. This could be telling us that there is simply congestion between Telstra and Snap.

What you should be doing is a speed test to the Telstra speed test server in Christchurch (I assume you're in Christchurch).

This will get us much closer to proving where the problem is.

But you also haven't told us where you did this test from either. If I use my desktop I get 45mbits to the Telstra server, if I use my laptop I get 20mbit, if I use my mobile I get 3mbit.

This is because my desktop is on the wired network. My laptop is on a .n router right now, and I'm only 4m away from it, but my laptop isn't fast enough to process a speed test properly.

My phone's CPU is simply to slow to process a speed test faster than 3mbit.

So the speed test isn't just telling us about your connection, so we need much more information to understand what we're seeing.

What you should be looking at first is the speed that your modem is 'syncing' at. The modem should be doing at least 10mbit's down. If it's not then we need to get to the bottom of that. The most common cause is 'house wiring' and there are endless threads about that here on GZ.

Having said all this, if you've been following the Telstra posts in the last couple of days you'll know that Gary from Telstra has said that they know their links are saturated at night time right now.

He confirmed that they have ordered more capacity from their 'up stream' providers.

My personal view is that the $75 deal is/was a rocking price. When you're doing marketing for this stuff you never really know if a promotion is going to get real traction. The conversations would have been "do you think $75 is enough to pull customers in?"... then you just have to suck it and see.

In this instance, the answer seems to be an overwhelming 'yes, $75 is the right price point right now to attract a bit of business".

I think we have to remember that if we were talking about a physical product then people would have just missed out when stock ran out.

The problem, or is it an advantage, with internet is that it's not physical, so you don't miss out on the deal. But what can happen is the capacity just gets a bit over sold.

If it's any consolation, you can be very very very assured that Telstra will move as fast as it can to make sure new capacity comes on. The last thing they want is to loose lots of existing customers at the expense of gaining new ones. That would just make the entire marketing push really pointless.

As an interesting point, the amount of new capacity they're talking about getting used to take 6 months from time of order to actual delivery (assuming there was even capacity there to purchase), so the fact that they can get it done in 2 weeks is just mind blowing.

So in short, I guess I'm saying, do a bit more checking to confirm where your issues are, keep chatting to us all here and we'll help you out, but if it's just a Telstra issue then hang in there, I'm sure it will get sorted sooner than later. :)

Speedtests do not give any information about your line. You have to look in your modem stats and post THAT information here.

I am in Welly. Speedtest.net just took the Chch server automatically. If I manually choose the Welly Citylink server I get under 2Mbit.

As for the router stats:
1064 / 16199

Edit. I don't download a lot. Youtube.com still works fine. To me it seems that if you want to open up Facebook or Stuff.co.nz it takes a while, maybe it stalls 2 or 4 seconds before it kicks in. Also noticed that with MS Outlook occasionally it fails to download email. It tries for maybe 120 seconds then MS Outlook gives up.

The Telstraclear website test gives me:
6.95Mbit and 0.79Mbit.

This test here was is RJ45 to router with cable.

Edit. Don't think there is much difference. RJ45 right now with Speedtest.net with the auto Chch server again I get:

The first one I posted ABOVE (scroll up) was wireless. ~4Mbit.

Ok, we're starting to prove this out a bit...

Speedtest.net will do a ping test first and choose the best server. 50ms is shocking, so something is congested some where.

I would download a copy of winmtr and do a bit of testing to some known sites to see what's going on.

Speedtest.net will only give you 2mbit to 'Wellington' because that server is actually hosted by CityLink. There's a bit of history/bad blood, with the two companies, as a result the 'Wellington' server is actually 'announced' to Telstra out of the US.... it basically means the data travels all the way to the .us and back, so that's not a real test of anything much.

If you go to speedtest.telstraclear.co.nz you'll be able to choose the Auckland and Wellington servers that are actually on their network.

I'm not sure what those router stats are that you're talking about, but I suspect that's saying you've got a 16mbit layer 2 sync speed.... which means you're modem is connecting to the exchange just fine.

Facebook and stuff being slow suggests DNS again, to me. Please reconfirm what dns numbers you are using on your router and PC.

Stuff and facebook both pull ads from a number of servers, this will cause page rendering to be slow. Install adblocker, block all the ad sites and see if that makes much difference. (plz remember that adblocker can stuff up rendering of GZ, so it's best to exclude it and either put up with the ads on GZ or by a sub, but the GZ ads all come off google anyway which should be quick enough).

However, if you figure out how to drive winmtr properly, I suspect you're going to find something in the local path is just congested.

As I said earlier, I've been watching latency jump up and down all over the place.

I've got another service that's just turned to custard this week and I suspect it's got as much to do with all the providers 'doubling' data and people are just moving more data. I'd really like to see some providers traffic graphs, I suspect we'll find traffic has jumped up.
