Just wishing to know if TC have any IPV6 dns servers, or do they have any future releases with IPV6?

Remember seeing something about them and their IPv6 rollout but haven't heard anything since and not sure if they are capable yet. Hardly any ISPs have IPv6 DNS yet. You need to use their IPv4 but that's fine since they will give you the AAAA records anyway.

TCL has recursive IPv6 nameservers available on 2001:4400:100:4786::1 and 2001:4400:100:4786::2. You shouldn't need (and generally should avoid) statically configuring these anywhere though, in case they need to be moved. Once IPv6 services are offered over the various access networks, these addresses will get handed out by PPP or DHCPv6 or whatever other protocol ends up being used for address delegation.

Yes, I work for TelstraClear.

Thanks for this, Im on cable, and just got me a new Apple Airport Extreme router. There are options for IPV6 DNS and i was interested in testing this out. Also would like to be using IPV6 on world IPV6 day.

David, is TCL actually planning on rolling out v6 to your DSL/Cable customers at all?

I wouldn't put the v6 addresses for the telstra v6 DNS servers into your router since TCL don't do ipv6 to customers yet. (I've heard they weren't planning on it any time soon, but David could probably shed more light).

If you have a v6 tunnel and add the v6 IP's for TCL's DNS servers, it'll likely slow down your DNS resolution, since the tunnel could be terminating outside TCLs network (or NZ) somewhere.

You can get IPv6 tunnels, though I don't know if they work on the AAE's. sixxs.net has a NZ tunnel POP in wellington somewhere, but I still wouldn't use TCLs v6 DNS servers with that tunnel

Thanks for that, just wanting to play around. But yes you are correct, i have notice that some sites are slowing down and taking sometime to load, and speedtest is alot slower, (maybe something with the v6 tunnel). Was nice to see what happens and how it works, but back to IPV4. Thanks for the input people.

TelstraClear provide a 6to4 gateway, but I wouldn't rely on it for a stable IPv6 connection. The 6to4 protocol often has routing problems, and has a nasty tendency for incompatibility with IPv4 stateful firewalls. Case in point:

$ ping6 -c 1 geekzone.co.nz
PING geekzone.co.nz(2001:470:35:4d4::2) 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 2001:470:35:4d4::2: icmp_seq=1 time=728 ms

# tcpdump -i vlan2
15:16:10.676239 IP 121.72.xxx.xxx > 192.88.99.1: ipv6 104
15:16:11.404241 IP 216.218.221.42 > 121.72.xxx.xxx: ipv6 104

Note the IPv4 encapsulated replies arriving from a different source address, which resolves to tserv1.sin1.he.net. Stateful firewalls block this by default.

Here is a trace route from Orcon to those recursive servers. Telstra, why you no peer with IPv6?:

Since Wednesday (which happens to coincide with IPv6 going live in several places at once: http://news.yahoo.com/ipv6-goes-live-004529801.html) I've had major problems with web surfing.

Is this a coincidence or do I need to change something on my router to ensure compatibility with IPv6?

Edit: I'm on Telstra with a cable modem using a Belkin Basic draft-n router.

TCL don't provide native IPv6, so it's not that. (Do any of your computers or your router have an ipv6 address at all?)

My understanding is that TCL are providing native IPv6 over their DOCIS network at present and plan on rolling it out  to their DSL network too at a later date

Not sure that's quite right.

My understanding was that it is all being worked on though.  I've got all IPv6 routing and switching installed, so I'm keen as to get it on the cable network so I can have a play... hint, hint, hint! ;)

Sorry keen IPv6 chaplets, native IPv6 on DOCSIS is currently the hardest and trickiest thing trying to be achieved in the .  Now, if DOCSIS ran within PPP, that would be a different kettle of fish.
HE tunnels can and do work but they probably won't get you to where you want to be, nor in a latency friendly manner.
