Hi,

Im sure I am not alone when i ask this question. So we are moving into the stonefields subdivision in mtWellington , Auckland and after finally accepting we have to get fibre for our phone and Internet I ask the question what is my $199 setup fee including? We are taking over a rental house which the current owners already have fibre setup - why does it cost so much when all the hardware is already installed ?

It stinks when I have no choice to use xnet , if I had a choice I would accept the fee but I don't , it's hard to accept the higher data price plus the setup charge and I have to sign up to a year ... Once again I have no choose as they are the only company I can use :(

It's only $199... Maybe this is the cost of the modern.

The setup fee covers the install and the router, the reason we are the only ones was based on the fact no one else was capable of deploying a PSTN grade replacement service over FTTH for Telecom when the contracts came up, the rest had no deployment models and freeware Asterisk boxes , if we had not accepted then Mike there would not have been any services for FTTH subdivisions over the last 4 years pure and simple, several thousand customers would have been crying over having no services available at all in these FTTH subdivisions. so it's not actually our fault no one else was up to the task , everyone is now trying to deploy VoIP services because of the carrot of UFB so choice will be on the way but before you think it stinks you may want to factor that background in as well.

At $200 for router + install I'd say you are getting the router at cost price as the install would be at least $60 to $90. Not a bad price for a good router. It stinks that after 4 years no other ISP can offer a service that is good enough.

Sorry , I didn't, mean to offend some people or companies with my choice of words. It is great xnet has been offering services for that period of time , guess you get used to choice - and this time it's not here so much. But hey I will be joining and as others have said before a good service and I am looking forward to the faster speed :)

If the install free includes the modern does that mean I can keep it when I leave the house ? I guess that is we're my question is , if the house already as a modern installed - why does another use get changed it ? This isn't so much a complain , sorry it may have come across like that - it more about understand whathe install covers ?

No worries Mike , understand when you are used to a large amount of choices for ISPs going into a subdivision where you are restricted doesn't seem right and I understand that but as others finally get a service that is a viable option then then there will be more choices so sorry stuck with us for a bit ... but hey were not actually bad guys :),

You are correct the modem is yours to keep , if someone has left one behind we can't actually use it as it's been paid for by the previous person.

Don't worry about the complain, you don't know if you don't ask , also nice to see a response like this when we explain the situation.

For the duration of the trial period no other ISP's took to the offer to supply services. Chorus then implimented a change freeze in these greenfields areas earlier this year as they will ultimately become part of the UFB network, so nothing will change until that occurs. Once they are upgraded to become part of the UFB rollout you'll be able to choose any UFB provider who has a resell agreement with Chorus.

Why don't you just buy the existing modem off the landlord, and sell it back when you leave?

Buying the modern sounds like a good plan , but my understanding is xnet will not decrease the price of the install .. Which is a shame but I guess it keeps things easy that way.

By the way, its not a modem (per say) but a router albeit one with builtin ATA, so you can deploy it on DSL as an AP, router, ATA or all the above.

Well I phoned xnet tonight , and the service was great , no waiting 10mins to hold music , got me set up and have even waved the setup fee because I am taking over the connection , so all up , a very happy customer and I can have the net the day we move in :) - great service xnet :) now to enjoy fast fibre.

Well this is very convenient and reasonable indeed. If I were a business that wanted to maximise profits I would also continuously charge different people for the usage of the same modem (another user's property, not Xnet). I'm appalled at the thought that more internet providers haven't caught on to this brilliant, money milking scheme. Of course other internet providers have slightly different ideas as to what a good service is meant to look like.
