Hi Guys

Can some one tell me if this is what is should expect for my dsl speed.

My situation:  I live in Te Awamutu in the waikato and am 12km from the township, my exchange is 3.7km from my house and the exchange is directly opposite to a primary school. My isp is telstraclear( I Know what your thinking). Apparently im connection is adsl1 and these are my download speeds;

Off peak = 650-750KB/s
Peak =      70 -150KB/s

So is this what i should live with? I have been in touch multiple times with telstraclear and got a whole lot of promises but nothing has eventuated. So am seriously considering going to good old telecom to get my peak speed back up. Do you guys think that changing to telecom would fix this. I know there will be a certain percentage of slow speeds at peak but at the moment its about 80% slower than off peak.

Any advice would be much apprciated

Thanks

If you look at the truenet stats as on another thread this is pretty normal for on peak and off peak stats from TelstraClear

What can you do? Wait until they "fix" the problem (its probably not your problem individually - it seems like a network wide problem) or change internet providers.

I came here to see if it had been fixed yet.

I think everyone who has this abortion of an issue has given up and moved ISPs.

@firstin do you have a master splitter installed?
Looks like you may be on older equipment at exchange. Send me a PM / email with your exact address & contact details if you like and I'll look into what the issue could be and some options.

Cheers

@firstin
Have looked at the address you PM'd me. A bit of an interesting one. The "exchange" a few km down the road from you appears not to be a full exchange. Your address seems to hang of the Te Awamutu exchange, so I suspect this exchange building is like a sub exchange - i.e an extension of the main exchange. Possible PCM / or fibre feed for the voice circuits.
Judging by the speeds you are getting - it appears you have a full kit of ADSL1 gear in this building, but certainly not ADSL2+ and possibly not even fibre feed.
The school across the road may possibley be fibre (if there is fibre to this exchange building), but could also be DMR (Direct Micro-Wave Radio) instead. Some of the RBI schools are feed via DMR.

As for upgrades to this exchange = nothing on the 5 year plan. So the speeds you get now are not going to improve any, and likely continue to decline.

I would advise still complaining about your speeds and the more people in you area that do this, the better.

Alternatively, you can look at an RBI wireless solution. Let me know if you want more info on this.

Thanks Fraser, your a wealth of information! I did notice that a couple of weeks a go they were laying new cables to my exchange so i was for ever hopeful it would be fibre.  I get 650-750KB/s at off peak time (first thing in the morning) which is going to be faster than the RBI anyway? If you reckon my speed would be much better with the RBI then i would LOVE to get some more info on it in my area. My main concern was my peak time drop in speed, the other night i did a speed test at peak and i got 30-59KB/s which is crap. I was hoping that changing from telstra (which they have finally released me from my contract) to telecom would fix my peak speed issue. even if it was around 500KB/s during peak i would be happy do you think this is reasonable ask of my exchange?

Any way Fraser thank you for all your help, I think i will change to telecom in the mean time and hope it fix's the issue. also i was wandering if this is my exchange

If you could send me some info about RBI it would be much aprreciated

thanks again

Adam

If your speed issues are connection related (ie cabinet congestion/backhaul from the cabinet) changing ISP's won't result in any difference in your speeds.
