Hi,

I'm on the verge of buying another ATA. I am wondering about the reports that Linksys are locking them all to VFX.

I've had some other reports (via Ascent) that unlocked ones are still available, but if I do get a locked one will WxC unlock it for me? I'm paying full price for the ATA so I'm not sure why I wouldn't be allowed, but being beholden to someone to get access to my own equipment isn't a nice feeling.

I fully understand, and agree with, with their closure of the ATAs connected to their network. I could also understand not unlocking subsidised devices (a la Vonage) but this isn't the case for the moment at least.

So:
1. Are Linksys VOIP devices sold in NZ locked to VFX?
2. Will VFX supply unlock codes on a case by case basis to non-customers?

Cheers,
Bruce

Bwooce: 1. Are Linksys VOIP devices sold in NZ locked to VFX?

Yes.  According to Ingram Micro's web site (who supply Ascent), it says:

This product is bundled with WorldxChange service

i.e. it is locked

Bwooce: 2. Will VFX supply unlock codes on a case by case basis to non-customers?

Phil Moore from WxC gave me an undertaking that if I wanted to disconnect from VFX, he would rewrite my PAP2T with a blank config. so I could get full access to it again.

So far, I have no reason to want to do that.  To the contrary in fact, VFX is a great service that blows iTalk out of the water in all respects except Asterisk connectivity.

I guess this is a different situation because you are presumably not currently a WxC customer, but Phil may have a solution for you.

Bwooce: I've had some other reports (via Ascent) that unlocked ones are still available

So far as I know, all the unlocked stock has been sold.  One of the other posters on this forum got the last unlocked unit from Acquire a few weeks back after Ascent said they were out of stock.

Another alternative is to buy your ATA from:

www.nicegear.co.nz

(the owner sometimes posts on this forum and says that he sources his product directly from overseas).

Can anybody confirm what Linksys devices being sold by Ingram are being sold locked? Is it only the PAP2's?

SPA2102 and PAP2T so far, but others are marked:

Vendor to confirm  or  21 Days ETA

so I suspect that the same will apply once they come into stock.

If you want to know the stock levels of any particular item, let me know and I can find out.

Try purchasing a device with 7 day right of return. When you receive it, don't plug into the Internet. Plug in the power and a phone into one of the phone ports. Dial: **** then 73738# (RESET#) then 1 to confirm. This will factory reset the device, unless VFX have there own special firmware etc.

If that doesn't work, call WorldxChange.

If that doesn't work, return ya box for a refund.

Please post your feedback here on the outcome.

I think you will find that the VFX config has been flashed into the device as the FACTORY DEFAULTS.

At least that's the case overseas where you can only buy ATA devices that are locked to one particular operator such as Vonage.

I looked into it earlier when looking for a SPA 3102 and found it far cheaper to buy in Australia or from eBay (US).
This was about $100 cheaper.
cheers,George

I got my PAP2 from Australia last year - the retail price there in a store was cheaper than I could get it for wholesale from Ingram.

Well I'm trying the second-hand route for my PAP, right before I saw the new DSE price for PAP2's. Damn.

Who wants to find out if these DSE units are locked or not?

My second-hand unit is unsubsidised, the seller is (hopefully) getting it unlocked from VFX for me. Thanks for your comments guys -- I'm still waiting on Maverick to pop up here and make comforting noises about this unlocking process though.

Cheers,
Bruce

PS Hint for second-hand sellers of VoIP equipment: make sure you get your profile on the box nuked before sending it, or the recipient may end up making calls on your account and/or the recipient may not be able to use it at all.

Interesting...  The DSE site doesn't actually say that this is a PAP2, but it sure as heck looks exactly like my one.

$98 incl. GST is also a very sharp price!  There is around $4.50 margin in it for DSE if they have purchased from IM.  Me thinks that DSE have cut some kind of deal here with IM.

I would be pretty sure that these units are locked to VFX as this new price from IM has only been available for the last few days.

Cheers,
Grant.

I do POP up now and then between my real job :), The unit in Question has been unlocked but please remember if the service is with us we will lock down the device, we will open up the second line if requested but we do lock down the SIP settings for the reasons I have previously stated in other threads, hope these are the right comforting noise's you want to hear

Thanks for popping back up Maverick, and it just reminds me how small a world it is that you know of my new(ish) device.

You've given me warm fuzzies, so well done and I hope you have a good weekend.

Cheers,
Bruce
