Today I received a press release from GENBAND, with an announcement made during ComunicAsia:

TelstraClear, one of New Zealand’s largest telecommunications companies, has deployed GENBAND’s advanced portfolio to transform to an IP-based voice network.

The GENBAND solution was implemented as part of a comprehensive network transformation project to enable the latest in IP unified communications services for residential customers, IP interconnect between national and international carriers, and IP-based PBXs for enterprise and government.

“By completing this groundbreaking national IP voice services modernization program, TelstraClear becomes the first full service provider in New Zealand to create an IP-based network capable of offering customers a full nationwide footprint for voice products over all network types, including the new government-funded ultra-fast broadband,” said Brenda Stonestreet, TelstraClear Head of Operations. “GENBAND is a longstanding partner for us in our network transformation efforts and their migration expertise and leading IP solutions have provided a future-proof roadmap. Since New Zealand cities are susceptible to being isolated during natural disasters due to its population spread over two elongated islands, our national, carrier-grade IP voice network will be highly available during ordinary to extra ordinary disruption.”

Powered by the C20 Converged IP Softswitch and A2 Communications Application Server , the GENBAND solution allows TelstraClear to expand its IP interconnect capabilities with other service providers both nationality and internationally at multiple centers, enabling the latest in IP voice services between carriers.

It may means that in order to keep a phone system functional in a power outage, you're going to need a UPS. Unlikely to affect DMS based services but SIP delivered services will have to be power protected.

My guess is this will mean that TCL can deliver high performance VoIP services with all the fruit to its customers in a profitable cost effective way that generates a win win for consumers and TCL's bottom line.

Unlike using 2Talk or VFX over TCL's network, the service will be more controllable by TCL, hence an ability to ensure service quality.

Will be see a $10 a month phone service for customers? That's the real question. Naked DSL or Cable or UFB + a voice service with all the fruit to compete with 2Talk and VFX.

Sounds a bit miseleading saying they are the 1st who can provide over all tail types. Their competitors have been doing this for 5+ years....

But otherwise a good move. It's funny how so many people are anti VOIP these days - there is some kind of outage and instantly its VOIP that caused it. Could you imagine if there were a fire at a major Exchange - POTS would be F**** for probably months, at least VOIP you can drop in replacements relatively quick.

So who remembers that for a long time, the Post Office had to put 6V dry cell batteries in houses to enable phones to ring and cheap the lines powered? They had to send techs around doing battery replacement before they electrified from the exchange.

And here's the thing - I remember this happening in 1979, when I was 8. It wasn't that long ago.

This was in Wellington at my parents house, which is connected to the 'vintage'' Courtenay Place exchange....

I'm pretty sure there are still a couple eveready in the ceiling here above where the old ringer is, underneath the second story floor that was put in 20 something years ago :-)

At a guess, they were probably still used until we changed to DTMF phones from the old rotaries, in.... late 80s I guess.

When I worked at the NZPO, the countney exchange like most others at the time was a Stowger exchange or click bang and even that pumped power down lines to maintain the calling.

re this article - it talks about the Stowger going to remove the need for batteries at subscribers end of line.
with the end of the old switchboard.

so it you had batteries in your house from NZPO or P&T - they must have been used for something else.

woukld like to know if I am wrong though

FYI - I collect old phones and one of most interesting bits i have is a lightning surge protector, looks so cool.
