Can you give us a little context for your query? SMTP authentication would typically be used to make sure someone wanting to send an email through the TC SMTP servers is an authorised TC customer.

You could work it out by telnet'ing to the SMTP port of the TC SMTP server, usually port 25 but according to Wikipedia it can be on 587.
sometime last year in may i noticed smtp authentication stopped working. I.e if your trying to auth to use their smtp server on port 25, no ssl when using a non-telstraclear connection it won't work anymore.
I'm trying to find out if this was stopped, and the main reason why.
The only reason i can think of is because of spam , or customers having their mail credentials phished and then bots using the credentials to use smtp authentication and then send out spam via tcl smtp servers.
