The other night I saw a new TV decoder plugged into a cable modem via ethernet and I'm just curious, how does Telstra's digital television work? How does this work when a customer wants digital TV and Internet? Is it an IP multicast service?

I really want to plug a bridge sniffer in between the modem and decoder to find out but thought I should ask the geeks on here first. If you can paste any links to technical docs/info about the system would be great!

as far as i know. the cable modem is for EPG data and PPV ordering, and software update (if any).

Internet is my backyard...

The cable modem is just a return path for PPV and to access the EPG. The video itself is a DVB-C MPG stream using irdeto encryption.

Do they run the EIT (EPG) stream via IP, most DVB systems run it in the main AIS stream as per DVB transport methods.

I understood that only the return PPV and interactive traffic was sent via the IP circuit instead of via phone.

Although, the only interactive feature available on the Cable TV network is the guide itself.
