Hello, Im thinking about switching to Telstra Broadband.

Im with Telecom Xtra atm, the problem is that Telecom Xtra gave me a floating IP, but does change only every 3 or more months LOL....I asked and they said that I just have to wait....when will happen, Ill see a new IP lol

So, Telstra: is possible to have a variable IP? That changes for every connection/reconnection???

Telstra Cable Broadband is static IP.

What/Who are you trying to hide from with a dynamic IP?

I guess the most obvious question is why you want this?

If it's in the belief you can do dodgy things on the internet and avoid things such as the 3 strikes law your logic is quite flawed.

Some people may require the same or a 'static' IP address however most people will not need this. No they are advertising their "Homeplan customer" can get a static IP for $5 a month.

This is not the INHOME Cable Broadband customers.

LOL no no...is becouse with a static IP, some people are able to flood you, or doing other things to you. When they get to know your IP, if its static. And I suppose you know, its not too hard to find out IPs.

Its all about privacy and security for myself.

Mmmm about the 3 strikes law, if you do anything bad, you will get caught ...static or not static IP, becouse your provider does know what is your IP at all times

That could happen to anyone. You have to annoyed a lot of people if you are trying to hide.

How about a firewall?

The DSL network is also very different to the HFC network. On cable authentication is MAC based to the modem and uses a static IP in the router. It is not PPP based.

Most people see a static IP as a plus in this world, which is why we've asked why you want to see it as a negative. The most common reason is because people want to try and do things that are dodgy or illegal - however because ISP's know exactly what users have an IP address it a regularly changing IP won't stop you from being identified.

Correct, as I said Im not trying to do anything dodgy haha...afterall every provider will be able to trace you if you did.

As I said its all about MY privacy: if I surf a website, they will know who i am..where im from bla bla bla...this with a static IP (that i dont really like)...

With a floating IP, no one will be able to trace me, so Ill have my privacy. JUST my provider will be able to know what Im doing...but at least I hope they wont send my informations to others.

Example to make clear. If you were owners of this site, you would be able to get already my IP. With a static IP, you would be able to get into my computer or check when Im connected or not....if i dont use antivirus or firewall. With a static IP, I would be the "perfect target" for bad people/criminals. Not that you are bad people ahahah...but you never know who is hidding under the screen.

With a floating IP, everytime I turn my computer off, my Internet Provider will change my IP. So you bad guys (example ahaha) wouldnt be able to check on me anymore...or doing anything dodgy to me.

What about cookies or malicious script that is installed on your pc because you have no virus checker or firewall?

Your Network card Mac address doesn't change, so whats not to say that is advertised when you surf the internet?

With DHCP your IP *may* change each time your modem/router is rebooted. Your PC has nothing to do with this since your PC merely connects to your router.

A large number of ISP's have all moved to stick DHCP in the last year anyway as it makes S92 compliance easier. This means your IP won't change even though you don't (for all intent purposes) have a static IP.

Mmmm last question for the night ahahah...what is s92? Do u have a link? I've done some researches too, to confirm that ALL NZ Providers are moving (have already moved) into static IPs.

Must be for some international laws??

All providers aren't moving to static IP's though.

There is a big difference between providing a customer a static IP and stick DHCP lease.

You mean "dynamic" IP, not "floating".

A static IP doesn't make you more of target then dynamic IP. I have the same IP for the last ten years and never had a problem.

Bad guys don't target your IP. Bad guys rely on a trojan planted on your PC that will do outbound connections and get new instructions instead of waiting for inbound connections.

I think you have some flawed concepts in computer security and need to read up a bit more on that.

Mmmm ok ok ...so I'll be clear LOL....I'm a bad guy...needs to change my IPs in order to attack others...as they first guys said, im proudly an hacker.

I would be safe with variable or static IP ahahah....but I do need a variable IP for other reasons....

After said that, are you going to help me, in finding a NZ provider with a non-static IP???
