TelstraClear Deploys Tekelec Sigtran Signaling Platform to Expand Network Capacity and Ease Transition to IP Future

EAGLE® 5 ISS introduces IP signaling — reducing costs while enabling the transition to IMS

MORRISVILLE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC), a leading developer of high-performance network applications for next-generation fixed, mobile and packet networks, today announced that TelstraClear, New Zealand’s second-largest full-service telecommunications provider, has deployed the Tekelec EAGLE 5 Integrated Signaling System (ISS) to expand its signaling network capacity and enable the transition to an all-Internet protocol (IP) architecture.

TelstraClear is a full-service operator providing business telephony data and toll-bypass, Internet services, cable TV/cable modem, mobile and residential services in New Zealand. An existing Tekelec EAGLE customer, TelstraClear selected to upgrade its system to the EAGLE ISS to provide additional network capacity and integrated applications that will provide a cost-effective transition to future network architecture.

“We selected Tekelec to upgrade our signaling network because of the company’s proven expertise and execution in our own network and its reputation as the global leader in IP signaling and integrated applications,” said Simon Titherington, general manager, Processes and Contracts, TelstraClear. “With the EAGLE ISS, Tekelec delivers a seamless and cost-effective transition strategy that will be a key competitive advantage.”

The Tekelec EAGLE 5 ISS supports Sigtran (signaling system 7 (SS7) over IP) signaling, which is the stepping stone for cost-effectively migrating to IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) at the signaling layer. When combined with Tekelec’s Service Mediation solution, the EAGLE enables service interaction between legacy, mobile, voice over IP (VoIP) and IMS networks. The Service Mediation solution bridges technologies, allowing SS7-based intelligent network/advanced intelligent network (IN/AIN) service platforms to coexist and interact with session initiation protocol (SIP)-based, IMS platforms to deliver services across virtually any network type. The capability allows operators such as TelstraClear to expand their networks and prepare to transition to more advanced technologies.

“We are delivering a roadmap for operators to advance to tomorrow’s next-generation network while also supporting today’s needs,” said Ronald De Lange, president and general manager of the Tekelec Network Signaling Group. “Tekelec’s EAGLE ISS signaling platform is purpose built to provide a flexible, standards-based framework to manage the financial and technological issues associated with this transition.”
