Crashplan has announced the opening of its new Sydney Datacentre, and trying to get a bit faster uploads I decided to take the plunge, reset my existing backup and upload everything again - only way of doing it, since they don't have a "move" function for the data currently in the US.

The interesting thing is that using TelstraClear I see this:

Tracing route to baa-syd.crashplan.com [103.8.239.3] over a maximum of 30 hops:

1    1 ms    1 ms     1 ms  srp521w [192.168.2.1]

Am I reading this right? Is the traffic to Sydney going to the US first? Something with routes? Looking at cdn.geekzone.co.nz which is also hosted in Sydney I see a completely different route:

Tracing route to geekzone.co.nz [108.162.203.66] over a maximum of 30 hops:

12 49 ms 45 ms 44 ms 108.162.203.66

Trace complete.

If this is the case, moving my backup target to Australia has done nothing for me - might even make it slower actually.

There probably isn't a shorter more direct path to Pipe Networks on Telstraclear due to peering and interconnection arrangements.

On Telecom the route goes fairly indirectly (Telecom > Global Gateway > Optus > TPG > Pipe Networks) but it's still NZ > AU

Any NZ ISP using Vocus for transit would have a pretty direct route like the Fyx one posted above.

Would be interesting to see a tracert on Snap (uses Telstraclear for transit) and Orcon (uses odyssey networks).

It looks like crashplan have a pipe connection in AU and pipe advertise a lot of their network at APE thus people connection via APE go that way and it is a lot better.

Companies like TelstraClear/GlobalGateway don't peer @ APE with everyone else thus they go the "long way".

Telstra and Telecom's peering arrogance is causing this issue for you. Go with an ISP who openly peers and don't take the transit route but the far faster peered route.

Doubt he wants to give up 100Mbit cable until UFB is in his area so there is no other option than Telstraclear.

Hopefully Vodafone goes with their peering policy rather than Telstraclear's once they consume Telstraclear.

Route traffic to that address over a local vpn hosted in NZ host that peers maybe.. could run a vpn on your geekzone servers.

That's an idea... But then we will increase the Geekzone server traffic utilisation (in-out) until I finish uploading my backups. Not a resource I want to use for this :(

Why not get a connection to APE and then peer with everyone yourself? a Gig Connection to APE is not that expensive as you may think especially if Citylink are in the same DC as yourself.. (Which they might be).

I'm pretty sure there's no connections problem for Geekzone itself. I am talking about my own home usage.

Astrill and Overplay have NZ servers iirc... probably more of the cheap international vpn providers do also.
