Hey guys,
I'm trying to setup a email to fax service for our local business association for which I am on the committee. We have received a database from the council with the details of all businesses in the area but it only has very few email addresses, mainly phone fax and mailing. Mail is going to be too expensive for us so I was thinking of faxing through our monthly newsletter including a link to signup for email.

I was looking at Hylafax:

Do you guys think it will work with OpenVFX? If not I suppose I could run it behind a PBX? Also does VFX support t.38?

VFX does support t.38, but I have not used that product before so can't say if it works from experience.

A bit OT but it sounds like this contact information is going to be used in a way that could be counted as spam. New Zealand law requires the recipient to subscribe to receive electronic messages but looks like this association is just getting the database from a third party and I'd be surprised if the council data can be used by others and is fully scrubbed.

No reason why it wouldn't but at something like US$1500 for Hylafax it's not the cheapest solution.

Have to agree, I would absolutely HATE if you starting abusing our fax number in this way. (I have in fact previously reported NZ companies to the DIA for this behavior). Be aware that many people will share this view.. it may not be the best thing to put your advertising budget towards.

Fax has been covered by the anti-spam law since late 2011.

Exactly why I am giving this heads up. It doesn't sound like this association collected the contact details from its members and buying/borrowing someone else's contact list for sending electronic communications is a sure way to get in the spammers list.

Yes I am fully aware of the spam laws but the way in which the list was built was in part due to door knocking and cold calling by the association which we did to help build this list. I would say that 90% of the numbers in there were from the activities of the association in retrieving them. People were given the option of not having these used for communication when they were asked.

To be honest we are not trying to sell them anything more so point out things like roadworks, new developments, changes in council policy etc. and from speaking with hundreds of members of the association for a few years not one would not want to get that kind of information.

Anyway I have asked them for pricing for non profits as it is very expensive and will let everyone know how we go. They seem to be wary that VFX will properly support t.38

We do support T38 Fax across the network and generally it works very well with most devices, however it is always prudent to test

Be that as it may, you would still be knowingly breaking the law for the remaining 10%, and unless you know which is which you could end up in strife.

Also, if the list was built 'on behalf of the council' then technically they may have given consent to the council and not your organisation. Something to consider anyway.
