Gather that TelstraClear's service in the northern and western suburbs in Wellington has been disrupted by a lorry crash, taking down some overhead cables.

The accident happened about 1:30PM yesterday and also resulted in a large power outage in the area for most of the afternoon and early evening.

From the TCL status page:

Service Disruption Start: 20 December 2006, 4:17 PM

Estimated Service Disruption End: 21 December 2006, 1:00 PM

Last Updated: 21 December 2006, 7:10 AM

Area Affected: Khandallah, Wellington

Customer Impact: There is a cable cut in Khandallah, Wellington affecting cable TV, local phone and cable modem services.

A truck has hit a pole at the corner of Cockayne and Khandallah cutting the fibre, coax and copper cables.

Technicians repaired the main fault but have encountered secondary fibre damage which is still effecting services.

No ETR as yet.

Ok, so it looks like it's restricted to Khandallah and I am in Johnsonville. Obviously not affecting "northern and western suburbs " but a limited area then.

Thanks for the info Sbiddle.

I just had a call from Mathew Bolland, the communications manager at TelstraClear, with an update. Yesterday, at around one in the afternoon, a truck with a large tank on the back went through some overhead cables. It caused considerable damage by stretching the cables, so TCL may have to lay up to a kilometre of new fibre.

Mat says it may take up until tonight before service is fully restored.

Seems pretty fast to me, considering the length of fibre-optic cable that needs to be replaced.

Running new cable overhead can be done pretty quickly, it's not like they have to feed it through conduit or trenches. Having said that you could argue the problem would have never happened had the cable been underground! :-)

I am in Kelburn and our TCL cable net/tv has been down since yesterday afternoon and was still out of action when I left home ~ 30 mins ago. Phone's still going OK though. =S

Well yes... splicing together fibre-optic cabling is a little more involved than jointing copper though :)

Speak to the truck driver about this.

TCL have always been generous when it comes to compensation for network outages. You do have to ask however and may not necessarily get a credit on your account but might get something like a calling card.

I don't know if compensation is fair here - the whole thing is clearly beyond TCL's control.

You'd have to know the cable height above the road before letting TCL off. In Miramar Wgtn there have been a few cables crossing roads that have been lower than they should have been.

Because in all fairness is not TCL's fault a truck driver hit a pole. If they are working to restore the service, but need to wait for a crew from the power company to put up a new pole, well... What do you know that we don't?
