I'm looking at uploading (ftp) 10-20GB of data 2-4 times per month this summer - photos going to an editing service in the US. 10GB would take around 11 hours to upload if I can manage the full 2Mbps for that whole time, which isn't too bad, but I'd quite like it to be faster.

If I upgrade to Warp Speed with 10Mbps upload will I get all or at least most of the 10Mbps? Do I need a new modem, a new router, anything like that? My main router's a Linksys WRT54GL running DD_WRT, from memory.

Edit - I'm in TelstraClear cable, and I get the full 2Mbps down/10Mbps up most of the time. I'm mostly interested in the experience of people who have the 10Mbps TC cable themselves, rather than the theory of it.

WT54G may struggle with that kind of speed so you made need something more powerful. If you have DSL atm then another option could be VDSL if you don't want Telstra installed.

I forgot to mention I'm on TC cable, I just added that to the OP. I'm mostly interested in the experience of people with TC Warp Speed themselves.

On 100 / 10 plan with a Netgear N900 router - we get great download speed from a US based server - upload speed not too bad (Dropbox / YouTube etc), but do not get full 100 / 10 - had seen 70 / 6 on some servers through a VPN.

Your speed experience will be influenced by a number of factors, but in theory you should see a better speed performance overall...

Thanks Skillie. I figure with 5 simultaneous ftp connections there's a better chance of maxing it out.

The WT54G is doing 15 down now, I'd expect it to do 10 up with out issue.

I wouldn't be so sure about 100/10 saturating though, ie if you're downloading at the same time as doing upload. iirc those little processors top out at about 20mbits.

I've pushed 10mbit up on my service without issue. I suspect that TCL have some dos management tools in the service some where (in the BRAS I'd suspect), as performance of TCP seems poor, but I've pulled 93mbit UDP.

iirc FTP is TCP, but if you use rsync I think that's UDP, but multi stream ftp pushing should get to 10mbit.

But either way, moving to a warp plan is a good idea.

You get a DOCSIS 3 modem to replace your DOCSIS 2 modem. That means TCL 'could' put more data on the line. We're all complaining about low data caps, we have to get people on to the new technology so they can push more data to us without causing congestion on the nodes.

Personally I'd order your Warp and use your WT54G.  If the WT doesn't perform to your liking then upgrade.

As an upgrade I'd recommend a Mikrotik 751, which also has the advantage of being able to terminate an IPv6 tunnel as TCL are still some way off delivering IPv6.

Thanks Don, I'll do the upgrade a month or two before I need the capacity. Good to know the little old router could keep up - I won't be downloading at the same time. I don't really care about the download, but will be interested to see what it can get up to.

ftp will be TCP, UDP is for services that can tolerate packet loss. My only option will likely be ftp, rsync wouldn't be common from service providers I don't think, too technical.

Does DOCSIS 3 reduce congestion at the nodes somehow?

Yes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS#Speed_tables

You get at least 4 times as many channels.

rsync these days is over SSH, so it's TCP.

The biggest issue will be throughout to the US with a single threaded connection. You need multi threaded connections to get decent throughput.

Yeah I figured that, I mentioned above I'd probably use 5 ftp threads. It'll be big files it's sending, which tends to saturate the connection more than lots of small files (as we all know, due to the overhead of setting up the connection).
