Hi all,

So here's my problem, I want to reply from my gmail account so it looks like the mail comes from my domain e-mail address. WITHOUT a gmail sender field.

Here's my set up:

example@domain.co.nz - Forwarding to example@gmail.com

example@clear.net.nz - Forwarding to example@gmail.com

When I reply from google (I use Thunderbird set up as IMAP) I want the reply to come from example@domain.co.nz without any association to example@gmail.com

After setting things up correctly in google (using googles outgoing SMTP) I thought all was well but the reply coming from example@domain.co.nz then has sender example@gmail.com in brackets afterwards. - No good for the small business as the two addresses are confusing.

I've searched many forums and it says you can add your ISP's outgoing SMTP as a solution however it doesn't seem to work with my set up and I'm pretty new to all this :P

My other problem is that my domain (through Register Direct) says to use my ISP's outgoing SMTP but for the purposes of solving this problem it seems that having an outgoing SMTP setting in the google account 'send mail as' for Telstra Clear when I want it to look like it's sent from example@domain.co.nz would be wrong?

Any help much appreciated, I've been trying for ages!

* I should also add that I'm on a regular gmail not google apps. Would changing to Google Apps help my situation at all?

You shouldn't be using Clear's SMTP server if you want a reliable service. Firstly they won't be set as SPF for your domain (in saying that Gmail may not be either) and you can only use them from a Telstra connection. I think what your describing is just a Gmail thing, not even sure if its inserted by their SMTP server?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I don't particularly want to use TelstraClear (the reason I switched to gmail in the first place was to avoid Telstra Clears LUDICROUS IMAP ($5 per month) and server storage charges... $11.44 per 10MB!! over 100mb)

I'm just frustrated as the work account I thought I'd set up successfully through gmail for the new boss has the 'from' correctly displayed (domain address) but has the sender as his gmail account! (in brackets straight afterwards)

Just trying to make it look like a business account and avoid confusion of which address to use.

P.S - You have an insane internet connection :)

Very much so, yes.

There may also be a way to add an SPF record for gmail that lets it work as you expect, but to be honest I'd be looking to go Google Apps if you want mail for a domain.

I'll have to look into SPF (I only know it on suntan lotion strength, which I'm presuming is definitely not correct here:)

I've also spent quite a bit of time syncronising the office phone with gmail for calendars/mail etc.. which I read somewhere can't currently be linked with Google Apps only regular Gmail?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm a true n00b.

Why can't there just be a setting to turn off the sender field in gmail!?

Google says:

Your Gmail address will still be included in your email header's sender field, to help prevent your mail from being marked as spam. Most email clients don't display the sender field, though some versions of Microsoft Outlook may display "From yourusername@gmail.com on behalf of customaddress@mydomain.com." For this reason, if you don't want 'on behalf of' to appear in any of your messages, we recommend using the SMTP servers of your other email provider.
This article is a bit old but explains how to do this.

Thanks MurrayM. I read the google guide previously regarding the header field, I just can't add my outgoing SMTP as Telstra (I don't know why) and also I'm not even sure that would work being that the address I'm trying to reply from is my domain address. (which it says on the domain mail settings needs to be set to my ISP outgoing SMTP.

I'll be sure to read the other guide though for Google Apps.

Why not migrate to Google Apps for Business for your domain email then you don't need to use a regular Gmail account, there's a small/free version:

I've emailed people at Australian univerities, who reply from their Gmail address, but it says ...@gmail.com on behalf of ....@griffith.edu.au

How do you get that to happen?

Why do you need to use Gmail? You can send out on mp.mail.isx.net.nz for register direct.

For some reason geekzone isn't displaying correctly in any browser... so I can't see the bottom posts correctly...

Anyway I've now set up a Google Apps account, set it to mail forwarding as per the guide here: http://lifehacker.com/5733436/use-a-google-apps-account-to-authenticate-outgoing-mail-from-your-regular-gmail-account

But!!!!

When I go to add my new address in the final send mail part of the guide (from my original gmail account) it simply gives me an error... which states that my username/password combination is incorrect. A few details from my end: My domain (as I said above) is through Register Direct.

I've set up google apps with my domain address forwarding to my gmail and I'm using the following as the send mail details: smtp.gmail.com Port 465me@mydomain.co.nzAnd my password which I know is correct.

Anyone have any ideas why I can't set this up as per the guide???

And yes CoffeeBaron, I tried setting it up through Net24 details but I had the same result as I've put above. A password/username error. I know the password and username are correct though...
